Qualifications

General Skills and Knowledge Required:
*MLS from an ALA accredited program or a Bachelor's degree with three
years of library cataloging/metadata experience.
*Skill in making independent and logical decisions based on knowledge of
cataloging policies, procedures, and standards.
*Knowledge of operating systems, servers, client software products,
e-mail and Internet tools.
*Time management skills sufficient to manage multiple and diverse
responsibilities concurrently while meeting quality and quantity
standards.
*Supervisory experience
*Excellent oral and written communicastion skills.
*File Transfer Protocol (FTP) experience.
*Library research skills
*Uderstanding of digital scanning equipment and processes.
*Working knowledge of Excel

Desired:
*Project management experience
*Web creation and design experience
*Knowledge of HTML/SGML/XML
*Understanding of demonstration of skills associated with data migration
*Knowledge of one or more European languages

Cataloging and Classification Skills:
*Skill in navigating through online cataloging tools such as Cataloger's
Desktop and Classification Plus
*Working knowledge of AACR2, ISBD, MARC21, and other library industry
standards specific to cataloging and classification.
*Working knowledge of record import and export protocols
*Original cataloging using AACRII and MARC21.
*Familiarity with Library of Congress Subject terms and subject/name
authority work.

Position Specific Skills:
*Thorough knowledge of and ability to search, edit, evaluate, upgrade,
and manipulate the content of: academic library systems and databases
including the national catalog of the Library of Congress, proprietary
databases: Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the local
integrated library system, Sirsi Uhicorn and Content DM
*Ability to train others in complex academic library operations and to
develop training resources.
*Ability to take action and assume responsibility for accuracy and
completeness of work

Decision Making Skills:
*Knowledge of cataloging projects and desired outcomes as discussed in
library and/or university committees
*Demonstrated communication skills including expressing ideas
effectively, respecting the opinions of others, active listening, and
willingness to share ideas
*Demonstrated ability to participate in assessing projects, seeking
additional information, and making appropriate changes when necessary
*Knowledge of the mission and goals of the department, library, and
University
*Demonstrated ability to provide leadership

Additional Qualifications



Duties/Responsibilities

Digital Library metadata cataloging, maintenance, etc.
*Create, evaluate and upgrade metadata in varied modules of the digital
library
*Create, evaluate and upgrade corresponding information in the local
ILS, which may involve original cataloging
*Create name and subject authority records for proposal to Library of
Congress NACO/SACO programs
*Review, revise, and approve corrections to computer-and human-generated
errors
*Assist in maintenance of database upgrades, project enhancements,
metadata crosswalks, with resulting cleanup
*Coordinate, manage, and delegate metadata assignments
*Prepare newly loaded digital projects for others to work on
*Supervise, train, and mentor metadata employees and volunteers

Training and Documentation
*Participate in beta testing of Digital Library software and subsequent
releases
*Prepare documentation for Digital Library projects for historical
purposes and for on-going project analysis
*Prepare training tools and instructions for Digital Library metadata
staff, students, and volunteers
*Provide hands-on training on a group or individual basis
*Maintain and submit monthly reports of metadata/cataloging activity and
statistics
*Maintain ongoing training and education in library related technology,
practices, and standards
*Participate in job-sharing opportunities in order to respond to
challenges in direction and priorities
*Attend academic library conferences as assigned

optimum outcomes

Job Description

This position has the lead responsibility for: 1) the day-to-day
oversight of metadata workflow, employee supervision, and operations
associated with the creation, editing, and/or importing of metadata for
digital objects; 2) ensuring quality control and maintenance of metadata
records which represent the University library's digital object
holdings; 3) collect, organize and report all statistics and other
assessment data relating to the workflow and activity of the Metadata
Unit; 4) hiring, training, evaluating and scheduling metadata staff; 5)
service the University faculty and students, CCLA, and other national
and international library users with regard to digital projects and
metadata application
