Job Description
The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) seeks applications for the staff exempt position of Information Specialist I for the Marketing and Communications Services department. The primary functions of this position include:
• Providing marketing and communications functions necessary to raise the level of awareness for UT AgResearch and the UT Institute of Agriculture through promotion of six Research and Education Centers in Middle and West Tennessee (Grand Junction, Jackson, Milan, Springfield, Spring Hill, and Lewisburg, Tennessee) among client groups including producers, industry, commodities organizations, the media, consumers, and government agencies such as the US Department of Agriculture, Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Homeland Security, Environmental Protection Agency and US Forest Service.
• Building relationships among media representatives in Memphis, Jackson, Milan, Nashville, Dyersburg, Paducah, Kentucky and other targeted media markets.
• Promoting events and programs associated with UT AgResearch Centers, such as Cotton Focus, Summer Celebration, Milan No-Till Field Day and the West Tennessee Agricultural Museum at Milan; all field days associated with each Center; faculty research projects; and other programs of the Centers through writing and/or production and distribution of news releases, feature stories, and video or Web-based news stories to appropriate outlets and for the Web.
• Uploading and updating Web sites.
• Coordinating special events, including advocacy group meetings.
• Producing and editing publications and producing exhibits.
• Creating computer-generated presentations and other AV materials.
• Representing UTIA, AgResearch and the Research and Education Centers at public, social and business gatherings.
• Working collaboratively and independently within the Marketing and Communications team.
The Information Specialist will be located at the AgResearch Center in Jackson, Tennessee and reports to the Director of Marketing and Communications for the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, who is located in Knoxville. The Information Specialist will also have day-to-day reporting responsibility to the Director of the AgResearch Center in Jackson. Some travel will be required.
A bachelor’s degree in public relations, broadcasting, journalism, public relations, advertising or a closely related field is required. General knowledge or background in agriculture is desired but not required. Proven, demonstrable experience in electronic news production or as a spokesperson, or in media relations, writing, publishing and special events management, as well as success multi-tasking within a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate must have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills. The ideal candidate would be an energetic, enthusiastic, passionate individual with a high level of integrity and initiative.
Experience in either of the following software programs is required: Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. Preferred but not required is experience in these software packages: PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Excel, Access, and Dreamweaver. Primary expertise should be with Windows-based software; however, familiarity with Apple/Macintosh operating systems is desired.
The Institute of Agriculture is a component of the University of Tennessee system. Headquartered in Knoxville, UTIA includes four divisions:
