Position Available: August 16, 2008. This is a full-time, regular, 
faculty position in the University Library.

*Duties and Responsibilities: *The Learning Commons Librarian will join 
colleagues from throughout the University Library designing and 
delivering library services for undergraduate students and for faculty 
and staff engaged in undergraduate education. Working closely with the 
Head of the Undergraduate Library in conjunction with the Associate 
University Librarian for Services, the Learning Commons Librarian will 
assist with the development of Undergraduate Library and Library-wide 
undergraduate service programs consistent with the University Library's 
strategic plan and transformation initiatives. The Learning Commons 
Librarian also works to establish strategic relationships with campus 
colleagues, departments, and programs likewise committed to the design 
of services aimed at supporting undergraduate student success. The 
Learning Commons Librarian will participate actively on related Library 
committees, task forces, and working groups and serve as a resource for 
other library units and the development of new service models, including

the Scholarly Commons.

The Learning Commons Librarian will report to the Head of the 
Undergraduate Library and will work collaboratively on the continuing 
development of the Learning Commons service model. The service model is 
built on a commitment to providing flexible space, information 
technology, student support, and programming designed collaboratively by

librarians and other campus providers of services to undergraduates.

The Learning Commons Librarian's responsibilities will specifically 
include assisting in identifying and further developing Library 
programming and services that foster the Learning Commons vision; 
developing programming and services by serving as an operational liaison

with Learning Commons partners and identifying best practices that 
foster collaboration; coordinating the delivery of service programs 
offered through campus partners, including CITES (Campus Information 
Technologies and Educational Services), Writer's Workshop, Career 
Services, Wellness Program, and the Campus Center for Advising and 
Academic Services; working closely with individuals responsible for 
staff and student worker training and development initiatives to ensure 
high quality customer service; coordinating and/or teaching student 
workshops on using the hardware, software, and other technologies; 
working at the Undergraduate Library's Integrated Services Desk to 
provide both technology and reference support and assistance; 
participating in planning sessions, committees, meetings, etc. to assist

in developing policies, procedures, and initiatives; working with 
Library Information Technology to insure support for technology; 
developing methods to assess the effectiveness services and programs and

to conduct needs assessments for potential services and resources; and 
developing and editing promotional and strategic communications 
materials. The Learning Commons Librarian will also participate fully in

other Undergraduate Library activities including collection development 
and stewardship, staff training, liaison to library divisions/units, 
outreach, and marketing.

The Library consists of more than 35 departmental libraries located 
across campus, as well as an array of central public, technical, and 
administrative service units. As a faculty member in the Undergraduate 
Library, the Learning Commons Librarian will join colleagues responsible

for the coordination and leadership of a


variety of programs and initiatives aimed at supporting undergraduate 
student success, including information services, instructional services,

Qualifications: _Required_: ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library 
and/or Information Science; strong commitment to quality user services; 
knowledge of undergraduate student information needs, technology skills,

and library use patterns; experience providing reference services in an 
academic library; experience providing instruction and/or training 
programs for library users or staff; working knowledge of Microsoft 
Office applications; interest and willingness to develop expertise with 
other software applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, SPSS); demonstrated 
ability to work effectively with a diverse community of library staff 
and users; ability to thrive in a fast-paced and busy service 
environment; ability to function effectively in a collaborative 
environment; excellent communication skills. _Preferred_: Supervisory 
experience; expertise with Web design and development; experience with 
Adobe Photoshop and other multimedia software applications; expertise 
with library outreach and marketing; experience with assessment of 
library services; familiarity with the application of gaming, social 
networking, and immersive environments to library service programs; 
experience participating in team projects.

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience. 
This is a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant 
Professor. Librarians hold faculty rank and title, and must demonstrate 
excellence in librarianship, research and service in order to meet 
University standards for promotion and tenure.

Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days;

11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an

additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, 
each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to 
employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and 
dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement 
System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon 
termination), with several options for participation in additional 
retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare 
portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
