James Madison University's Special Collections, a unit of JMU
Libraries & Educational Technologies, is pleased to offer an eight
week summer internship with practical and hands-on experience in
the principles and techniques of preservation in the library's
Preservation Unit. The ideal candidate would be considering a
career or further study in the fields of archives, conservation,
library science, or museum studies. This internship is made
possible by an endowment generously provided for Special
Collections by Mrs. Margaret Hanna Brooks Burruss, class of 1945.
The preservation intern will learn and participate in the daily
activities and special projects of the Preservation Unit, including:
Workflow of materials through preservation; inventory tracking and
control
Preservation selection, assessment, and decision-making
Conservation treatment for general circulating collections
Stabilizing, re-housing and custom enclosures for non-circulating
collections in Special Collections (materials funded by an NEH
Preservation Assistance Grant)
Exhibit design, preparation and installation
Introduction to environmental monitoring technology
The preservation internship will focus heavily on re-housing and
stabilizing materials in Special Collections with funding from an
NEH Preservation Assistance Grant designated as a "We the People"
initiative. Please see http://www.lib.jmu.edu/edge/article1.aspx
for more information on this project.
The 2008 summer internship provides a $2,000 stipend based on a
total of 160 contact hours. (Eight weeks, 20 hours per week)
Candidates seeking academic credit for the internship are urged to
enroll for independent studies with their advising departments.
Candidates should submit a letter of application stating their
proficiency for, and interest in the internship, a resume, and
contact information for three references to Julia Merkel,
