Shaw Environmental has immediate public outreach
openings in several communities in southwest Arizona
and New York City. (The description below is for the
AZ positions, but the NYC position is permanent up to
five years.)
The successful applicant will be responsible for
executing the Community Outreach Plan designed for
individual target communities and approved by the
client and the appropriate regulatory agency.
Most of these positions typically will support a
Voluntary Remediation Program to be implemented in a
community where mine or smelter operations may have
caused elevated concentrations of metals in the soil
of public and private properties.
Private-property, soil sampling in each target
community is important ultimately to determine the
extent of any cleanup solution, but it also requires
the public to be informed and involved beforehand. The
outreach program is intended to provide information to
the property owners and the general public in a
variety of formats that effectively explains the soil
sampling program and encourages maximum participation
through the execution of property access agreements.
Additionally, the successful applicant will be
required to encourage community involvement in the
sampling and remediation program developed for each
community by providing general guidance on the type of
outreach activities to be carried out.
The community outreach specialist will be required to
understand the unique culture and public expectations
in individual communities, as well as be able to
understand and explain how the former mining or
smelter operations may have affected the target
community.
This person must be knowledgeable of previous
environmental investigations related to the former
mining or smelter operation because he/she will be
communicating with local leaders and the public on a
routine basis and must be convincingly knowledgeable.
More experienced outreach specialists will serve in a
managerial role responsible for leading other staff
efforts to:
1. ensure the community outreach office is a pleasant
place to be, easily accessible to the public (in terms
of office hours, location, and staff availability to
address local concerns), and that visitors leave the
office more informed and in a better mood than when
they entered;
2. educate and inform the public about the soil
sampling and cleanup programs using a public website,
fact sheets, newsletters, brochures, public
announcements, open houses, and personal attention and
involvement in community activities (as shown in items
5 and 6);
3. track communications with property owners and
others;
4. manage data related to sampling requests and
activities in a consistent and organized fashion;
5. prepare and provide presentations on the sampling
and remediation activities to business groups, civic
groups, local authorities, school personnel and
classrooms, and local authorities and community
leadership;
6. participate with staff members in significant
community activities to demonstrate commitment to the
community (i.e, participation in holiday parades;
United Way fundraising events, boy and girl scout
activities, public school activities);
7. be aware of and sensitive to the pulse of the
community about the sampling and remediation program
to keep the client appropriately informed and to avoid
any surprises for the client;
8. ensure that sampling and remediation crews remain
aware of and supportive of program goals to be the
safest, most professional people in the community, to
live in and be a part of the community, to be
consistently friendly and helpful to strangers to help
preserve and improve on Shaw’s reputation within the
community (and by default - the client’s reputation in
the community).
These are full-time, though long-term temporary,
positions. Assignments are expected to last up to
three years each, depending upon what is found during
sampling activities in each community. The entire
program, located at various mine and smelter sites
throughout the U.S., is expected to be completed by
2014. (Other sites are located in Oklahoma, Kansas and
Pennsylvania.) While in these temporary positions,
specialists may live in company-rented housing in the
community that may be shared with other Shaw staff
members. Travel to home occurs every three weeks.
A background in geology or geography is a major plus.
