Electronic Resources/Collection Development Librarian
The University of South Alabama Biomedical Library is seeking a
motivated, energetic librarian to manage electronic resources and
coordinate acquisition/cataloging and collection development of print
and electronic resources in the Biomedical Library. This is a
tenure-track faculty position with rank at the instructor or assistant
librarian level, depending on qualifications and reports to the
Assistant Director for Collection Management.
• Required
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; Excellent oral and written
communication skills; Strong service orientation
• Preferred
Candidates with any combination of these qualifications: Demonstrated
experience/interest in medical information; electronic resource
management experience; acquisition and cataloging experience, preferably
with the National Library of Medicine classification system;
demonstrated knowledge of scientific research process, scholarly
communication, and copyright and intellectual property issues;
negotiating electronic licenses; excellent judgment and decision-making
skills; familiarity and facility in working with vagaries of digital
media; ability to adhere to rigorous accuracy and thoroughness
requirements; ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly;
flexibility to work independently and as part of a team; and computer
skills in integrated library systems, database systems, word processing,
and spreadsheets, as well as comfort in dealing with a variety of
changes in systems licensed for users.
Principal Responsibilities:
• Acquires non-serial materials
• Manages monograph approval plan
• Identifies and downloads or creates descriptive cataloging for
monographs, verifying and/or supplying appropriate subject headings, and
NLM classification; uses Voyager, OCLC, WordCat, NLM Authority codes,
and other systems to accomplish these tasks within established
guidelines. Works on special projects to add or enhance existing records
• Withdraws library materials, suppresses records, etc.
• Administers library electronic journal management system and maintains
the library’s electronic book web page, updating, developing, and
loading information as needed.
• Reviews licenses for electronic resources (books, journals, databases)
• Maintains, updates and analyzes annual journal and electronic resource
usage statistics
• Chairs Electronic Resource Committee; coordinates collection development
• Compiles collection analyses, working with department liaisons
• Participates in Reference Desk coverage and weekend rotations
Additional Responsibilities:
• Participates in Library faculty planning and evaluation of library
services and resources
• Professional development activities including: research and
publication, professional continuing education, professional service,
and other activities that support the University, its libraries and the
profession
• Achieves and maintains membership in the Medical Library Association’s
Academy of Health Information Professionals
• Serves as liaison to one or more departments of the College of
Medicine, Nursing or Allied Health Professions
• Other duties as assigned
Salary/Benefits
Salary range: $40,000-$46,000, based on qualifications. The University
