The University of Michigan Library seeks applicants who are ready take
the lead on a major metadata infrastructure project in a new full-time
position in the Library Systems Office.  The project goal is to provide
a coherent, generalized systems infrastructure/architecture for storage,
maintenance and access to the bibliographic metadata that supports a
variety of systems throughout the University Library.  This position may
be filled as a Programmer/Analyst or as a Librarian depending on the
qualifications of the successful candidate.

Background:  The University of Michigan Library currently supports
multiple systems for storage and management of bibliographic metadata,
e.g. catalogs and databases of specific collections or materials,
indexes to journal articles, our main library catalog, etc..  Metadata
in these systems is stored in a variety of formats (e.g. MARC21, MODS,
Dublin Core, etc.) and is managed by multiple Library units.  Our goal
is to increase efficiency and reduce redundancy in the management and
storage of bibliographic metadata by building a robust and open
infrastructure.  This new infrastructure will expose metadata in ways
that will facilitate development of services while offering improved
options for searching across all of our bibliographic metadata together.
The successful candidate, in collaboration with staff, including
metadata experts, in other library units, will develop a project plan
and provide leadership throughout all project phases, from requirements
gathering through implementation and testing.  As a Library Systems
Office team member, s/he will also participate in a variety of tasks
related to support, maintenance and enhancement of existing systems.

Qualifications:
Required:
* BS/BA degree, preferably in computer science.
* Experience with multiple bibliographic metadata formats (e.g. MARC21,
MODS, Dublin Core,      Marcxml).
* Programming experience, preferably including perl.
* Experience with SQL and relational databases.
* Experience with xml-encoded data.
* Ability to manage a multipart project, working collaboratively with a
variety of stakeholders.
* Ability to learn quickly and to apply knowledge to real situations.
* Ability to establish measurable goals and objectives and to implement
strategies to achieve them.
* Flexibility in working on multiple priorities and projects
simultaneously.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a
multicultural/collaborative environment.
* Demonstrated analytical skills, and aptitude for details.
* Demonstrated good English oral and written communication skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and
within a team setting.
Desired:
* Experience working in a large academic library.
* Masters degree in Information Science, Library Science, or other
relevant discipline.
* Experience managing data in MARC21, MODS, METS, Dublin Core, marcxml,
and other bibliographic metadata formats, preferably including
experience with migration and/or transformation of metadata.
* Experience developing interoperable systems using web services, system
APIs, etc.
* Experience working with a Library Management System (LMS), especially
Aleph.
