POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Metadata Coordinator
University of Houston Libraries

Responsibilities:  Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata 
Services, this position will identify and coordinate the application of 
appropriate descriptive, administrative, and structural metadata schemas

for digitized and born-digital materials; oversee documentation, 
training, and quality control for metadata projects; work closely with 
other departments and units to develop policies and workflow for digital

collections; develop effective strategies for translating metadata 
between formats and integrating metadata from a wide variety of sources 
to improve search and retrieval within and across collections; supervise

the work of 1 FTE Metadata Specialist and provide training and 
assistance to others in the department supporting metadata services; and

participate in local, state and national metadata initiatives, including

the Texas Digital Library.

The UH Libraries recently adopted a set of strategic directions 
(http://info.lib.uh.edu/strategic_directions.pdf) and we seek 
individuals who will be interested in supporting and implementing this 
plan.  The Libraries support the ongoing professional development of 
librarians and our goal is to recruit librarians committed to continuous

learning.  Librarians hold academic ranks pursuant to the University of 
Houston Librarians' Governance document.  They are expected to develop a

record of service and professional involvement.

Qualifications:  Required:  ALA-accredited masters degree; experience 
with one or more non-MARC metadata tools and formats including Dublin 
Core, EAD, METS, MODS, OAI-PMH, PREMIS, or TEI; familiarity with MARC 
bibliographic and authority formats; awareness of current issues and 
trends in metadata and digital library development; excellent oral and 
written communication skills.  Preferred:  Supervisory or training 
experience; strong technology orientation including experience with XML 
and XSLT; familiarity with the technical issues that accompany rights, 
preservation, and structural metadata; ability to perform analytical and

detailed work within the context of broader service goals.

Salary:  $44,000 to $48,000 expected hiring range, depending on 
qualifications.  Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement 
programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available; 
release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local 
income tax.

Library Information:  The UH Libraries are a member of the Association 
of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, and the 
Texas Digital Library Alliance.  The Libraries hold over 2 million 
volumes.  Total staff includes 48 professionals and 120 support staff.
