Research and Instruction Librarian and Bibliographer
(2 positions) 

The Georgetown University Library seeks two Research
and Instruction Librarian/Bibliographers to support
the teaching and research endeavors of the University
community by providing research, reference,
instruction, and collection development services.  

Responsibilities: 

The Research and Instruction Librarian and
Bibliographer: 

    * provides reference and information services in
the humanities, social sciences, and business;
    * interprets and analyzes information needs of
students, faculty, and other users of the Library;
    * recommends and directs users to appropriate
sources of information;
    * provides individual research consultations,
teaches library research sessions, and creates
bibliographic guides and other instructional materials
in subject areas congruent with collection
responsibilities.

 

The positions also serve as principal bibliographer
and liaison to one of the two following sets of
departments and programs:  American History/American
Studies/African American Studies; or
Communications/Journalism/Public Relations/Media. 
Each position: 

    * develops collections in line with the
pedagogical and research needs of the University,
including the expansion of Digital Georgetown, and
selects materials in identified subject areas;
    * works with faculty to learn more about their
research and curricular needs, to keep them informed
of the library’s activities, and to integrate the
library’s resources into faculty research and
curricular activities;
    * contributes to the development of cooperative
collection development programs with other libraries
and library consortia;
    * monitors collection development and scholarly
publishing trends in research, libraries, and the
commercial sector;
    * monitors vendor approval plans, recommends
annual allocations, and assists in monitoring the
library materials budget in the assigned areas of
responsibility.

 

Requirements: Masters in Library or Information
Science from an ALA-accredited program or combination
of equivalent degree and experience.  

Minimum 2-3 years’ experience providing reference
services in an academic environment; familiarity with
CD-ROM, online, and Internet searching; and ability to
work in a dynamic environment. Ability to teach
library research instruction classes. Minimum 1-2
years’ experience working with collections and
collection development within an academic and/or
research library via a combination of graduate
degree/s, undergraduate degree/s, some depth of
selection experience, or substantial professional
experience in one of the primary subject areas listed
above. Additional preferred supplemental
qualifications to the primary subject areas are: 
Slavic languages, Russian/East European/Eurasian
Studies; Political Science, or Social Science data.   
Must be able to demonstrate, through study or
experience, a broad-based knowledge of the literature
of the subject areas within the scope of this
position.   

Working knowledge of one, preferably two, foreign
languages highly desirable.  Demonstrated awareness of
trends in the application of information technologies
to library services. Proven ability to use common
software tools to update and maintain website content.
Demonstrated awareness of trends and developments in
the national and international publishing worlds
(e.g., pricing trends, scholarly communication), and
the ability to assess their impact on library
purchasing policies and services assessment.
Demonstrated leadership and collaborative project
management skills, especially the ability to lead
diverse project teams to meet project goals and
deadlines. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral
communications skills.  Superior analytic and
problem-solving skills. Record of professional
accomplishments and commitment to ongoing development.


Salary/Benefits/Rank: Salary commensurate with
experience.  Comprehensive benefits package including
21 days/year paid leave; medical; TIAA/CREF; tuition
assistance. This is a 12-month,
Academic/Administrative Professional (AAP)
appointment.
