Archivist for Metadata and Encoding, Duke University Libraries
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Head of the Cataloging Section, Technical 
Services in the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library, 
the Archivist for Metadata and Encoding provides leadership and
technical 
support for metadata creation and encoding activities for the Duke 
University Libraries.  In close cooperation with the Metadata Librarian 
based in the Cataloging Department, this position will consult on
digital 
collections projects, following local and national metadata and encoding

standards. This position also provides expertise and support for RBMSCL 
XML encoding activities, including finding aids and digital collections,

does some processing of collections, and performs occasional reference 
service. 
Responsibilities
In close cooperation with the Metadata Librarian based in the Cataloging

Department, this position will:
Shape, guide, and manage the processes for provision of metadata for the

digital collections program;
Coordinate metadata activities, maintain communication among all staff 
associated with the creation of metadata, work closely with the Digital 
Collections Program Coordinator and project sponsors to develop 
appropriate structures and levels of detail for digital projects;
Coordinate and/or carry out training for metadata providers and data
entry 
staff;
Co-chair the Metadata Advisory Group, which will develop guidelines for 
metadata creation, identify core elements common to all library
projects, 
set standards for levels of detail and granularity, and serve as 
consultants to the Metadata Librarians and metadata providers.

This position also:
Provides primary expertise and support for RBMSCL XML encoding
activities, 
including finding aids and digital collections; develops and maintains
XSL 
style sheets; develops, in collaboration with other staff, internal 
encoding standards; evaluates and deploys software for use in encoding
and 
display; serves as department liaison to Information Systems Support for

mounting encoded content on Library servers; provides training for
staff, 
interns, and student assistants in encoding standards.
Provides guidance for the preparation of preliminary descriptive tools
for 
manuscript and archival collections, including printed and encoded 
inventories or container lists, databases, and subject and other
indexing.
Conducts and contributes to departmental outreach when needed, such as 
presentations, exhibits, and publications.
Participates in library and campus committees, professional
organizations, 
and the greater academic community as appropriate.
Provides reference service for RBMSCL on a rotating Saturday and holiday

schedule.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Trains staff, student assistants, interns, and volunteers in EAD
encoding 
and metadata production.
Qualifications
It is the expectation that all Duke University Libraries staff members

EDUCATION:
Required:  MLS from an ALA-accredited program, advanced degree in
archival 
studies or an academic field related to RBMSCL holdings, and/or relevant

combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: 
Required:  Experience with Encoded Archival Description; working
knowledge 
of encoding software, such as NoteTab Pro; working knowledge of metadata

schemas, such as Dublin Core, METS, MODS, PREMIS, and/or TEI;
familiarity 
with DACS, and processing manuscripts and archival material; excellent 
interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; flexibility and 
ability to adapt to change; ability to work independently and as a
member 
of a team; working knowledge of MS Office applications; demonstrated 
commitment to providing outstanding customer services.
 
Preferred:  Prior experience working in an academic research library; 
demonstrated XSLT skills; experience with library databases, such as 
ALEPH, and MARC cataloging; demonstrated ability to manage complex 
technical projects; demonstrated collaborative skills; ability to manage
a 
complex workload, prioritize tasks, and complete work on time with
minimum 
supervision.
Working Conditions
Normal office environment 
Must be able to lift 30 pounds and unpack, shelve and shift large 
quantities of library materials; 
Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials 
containing dust and mold is possible 
Frequent bending, crouching, stooping
Occasional weekend shifts required.
Occasional travel required

Salary and Benefits
Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience.
