The University and the Library
*One of the world's leading research libraries, Yale University Library
is a full partner in teaching, research, and learning at Yale and is
visited by scholars from around the world. A distinctive strength is its

rich spectrum of resources, including approximately thirteen million
volumes and information in all media, ranging from ancient papyri to
early printed books to electronic databases. The Library is engaging in
numerous projects to expand access to its physical and digital
collections. Housed in twenty-two buildings including the Sterling
Memorial Library, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the

new Bass Library, it employs a dynamic and diverse staff of nearly
six-hundred who offer innovative and flexible services to library

*The Position
*The International E-Collections Project Specialist will report to the
Manager, International Digital Special Projects and will be an active
member of the Electronic Collections Department, communicating regularly

with library staff at many levels and in many departments. The
Electronic Collections Department works together as a team to provide
responsive, effective, and evolving leadership and coordination of
electronic collecting and supporting of the conversion of electronic and

digital collections. Among the international projects supported by this
position are AMEEL (A Middle Eastern Electronic Library) and OARE
(Online Access to Research in the Environment). In Project AMEEL, Yale
University Library leading a partnership of committed international
collaborators, is designing and building a digital library that focuses
on the Middle East (ME). This online library includes a front end or
"portal," integrating a significant portion of currently available ME
electronic resources, including bibliographic records, selected
abstracts, full text, and other formats in the Roman and particularly
non-Roman, vernacular scripts. We are also adding newly created digital
materials from and about the ME region, originating from a variety of
participants including libraries, publishers, and commercial sources.
OARE is a partnership of international publishers, universities, and
multilateral institutions to provide institutions in more than 100
least-developed nations free online access to leading international
scientific literature. Yale's OARE involvement is a joint project
between the University Library, the School of Forestry & Environmental
Studies, and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

*Responsibilities
*Reporting to and working under the general supervision of the Manager,
International Digital Special Projects with latitude for independent
action, the International E-Collections Project Specialist performs a
variety of tasks necessary for providing services -- administrative,
technical, and data control -- to coordinate and oversee the technical
development and content management for international electronic
collections special projects. As a working supervisor, the International

E-Collections Project Specialist hires, trains, and evaluates supporting

assistants, troubleshoots and resolves problems that arise related to
the digitization, architecture development, and financial tracking of
project costs. In addition, the Project Specialist is responsible for
some content data entry and verification, assists with partner
communications, and contributes to project direction.

Selected duties include:
Oversight of digitization workflow, coordination of systems maintenance,

liaising with external contract staff and inter-institutional program
partners, inventorying of project assets, exploring and reporting on new

technological opportunities, and collating and incorporating simple
content records in project databases.

The Project Specialist performs other duties as required to meet project

goals and assist as needed in other Electronic Collections Department
activities including electronic collecting curation for Yale University
Library and digital conversion activities.



*Qualifications
*For appointment as a Coordinator III, a Bachelor's degree and three
years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and
experience. For appointment as a Librarian I, an ALA-accredited MLS
degree or a Master's degree in a relevant field with related library
training and experience. Additional Education and Experience:
Supervisory experience, including hiring, training, evaluating, and
supervising the work of staff, monitoring quality of work. Experience
with computer applications, preferably those related to digitization
(Adobe, ACDSee, scanning software, OCR software) as well as the
Microsoft suite of applications, email, web-authoring tools and HTML
markup. Preferred: Knowledge of library and publishing functions with an

emphasis on electronic resources management, including acquisitions, and

vendor relations with publishers and content providers. Preferred:
Knowledge of general database structural concepts. Familiarity with
principles of database design; experience working with and technical
systems knowledge of relational database systems, preferably SQL Server
or Access. Preferred: Research or special library working experience and

knowledge of the STM electronic publishing environment and scholarly
communications issues. Preferred: Demonstrated project management
experience. Preferred: Experience delivering content in web-based
applications. Excellent organizational and communication skills,
particularly ability to communicate with broad spectrum of staff.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Demonstrated ability to

work independently in a rapidly changing and demanding environment,
manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and exercise sound judgment. Must
be able to prioritize appropriately when under pressure of deadlines, to

multi-task, and to schedule tasks for successful outcomes. Must work
well in a team environment; and work effectively with a variety of
people with varying technical skills and knowledge, and from diverse
work and social cultures. Ability to plan, initiate, and implement
effective programs, projects and services. Ability to develop clear
documentation. Demonstrated understanding of the importance of serving
the reader at the end of the information chain.
Demonstrated reliable attendance and punctuality, accuracy, and
attention to detail. Preferred: proficiency in a language other than
English (French or Spanish a plus)
