The Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) has an opening for a
Metadata Librarian at a minimum starting salary of $55,706 per year
(Federal grade GS-11). Headquartered on the National Mall in
Washington, D.C., SIL serves the Smithsonian Institution, the world's
largest museum complex, with holdings of 1.5 million books, manuscripts,
and other materials in 20 libraries throughout the Institution.
DUTIES: Incumbent creates descriptive metadata based on user needs and
cataloging principles and of non-MARC metadata schemas/standards such as
Dublin Core, XML, METS, MODS, or MADS or exchange protocols such as OAI.
Contributes MARC cataloging to OCLC and the Smithsonian Institution
Research Information System (SIRIS) using LCSH and LC Classification.
Uses promising new metadata/cataloging tools or technologies, and
develops strategies for integrating new technologies and services into
existing practices. Develops/modifies software tools to meet local
metadata creating and conversion needs. Provides metadata advice and
support for digital asset management systems. Participates in
Smithsonian, national, and international discussions related to the
harvesting or production of descriptive, administrative, technical, and
structural metadata. Establishes local policies, procedures, and
guidelines for the harvesting/production of metadata. Coordinates
metadata production and trains support staff. Establishes metadata
evaluation and quality assurance procedures. Maintains a central
repository of information on current metadata standards as used at
Smithsonian Libraries. Provides specifications for outsourcing the
production of metadata for digital resources. Oversees the loading of
vendor supplied metadata. Analyzes metadata provided by external
vendors to determine conversions and enhancements needed to support
access. Assists in preparation of grant proposals for digital projects.
Serves on SI or SIL committees or task forces.
