Assistant Professor of Bibliography, five tenure-track positions --  The
University of Akron -- Ohio
 
The University of Akron seeks motivated, collegial library professionals
for five tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor of
Bibliography. The successful candidates will be required to: have an
MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited school; have excellent oral and written
communication skills; have the ability to work well with others and to
provide leadership within the diverse settings of a complex university
organization; and, have a strong service ethic and demonstrated
appreciation for and effectiveness with a diverse student body. Successful
candidates will be required to meet the University Libraries' criteria for
promotion and tenure which include conducting research, teaching,
participating on library and university committees, and serving in
professional organizations. APPLIED SCIENCES LIBRARIANUnder the direction
of the Head of the Science & Technology Library, oversees collection
development, provides library related instruction, and serves as liaison
to the following academic departments: Geology, Computer Science,
Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Provides
reference service at the Science and Technology Library, including one
evening per week. Required Qualifications* Educational background in the
natural or applied sciences or an engineering discipline, or professional
experience in an academic library working with science or engineering
disciplines * Expertise in electronic access to data and Web-based
information services.Preferred Qualifications* Broad knowledge of the
science and engineering disciplines * Knowledge of the literature of
science and engineering including patents, technical reports, and
conference proceedings * Knowledge of databases in science, allied health,
and engineering * Experience creating and maintaining Web pages * Graduate
degree in science or engineering is highly desirable.GOVERNMENT
DOCUMENTS/REFERENCE LIBRARIANUnder the direction of the Head of Reference,
provides oversight over the University Libraries' U.S. Government Documents
collection and ensures ongoing compliance with the Federal Depository
Library Program Guidelines. Serves as a major resource within the
Reference Department relating to questions that involve the collecting and
use of government documents, keeping colleagues inside the department and
the University Libraries apprised of changes in the field. Provides
leadership in transitioning the program from one based primarily on a
print collection to one that is Web-based. Works closely with teaching
faculty to encourage use of the documents collection. Maintains the
Government Documents section of the University Libraries website.
Represents the library and its documents programs in local, state,
regional, and national forums. Performs duties in general reference,
collection development and the information literacy program.Required
Qualifications* Knowledge of emerging trends in government documents
programs* Familiarity with a broad range of government document resources*
Competence in web page applications and other computer based technologies*
Willingness to work weekday evening and weekend hours.Preferred
Qualifications* Experience in Reference and/or instruction, either in the
classroom or in a library information literacy program* Previous
experience providing government documents reference service in an academic
library* Coursework and/or extensive knowledge of the resources found in US
government documents* Ability to use a wide array of subject resources,
print and electronic* Ability to work independently* Experience directing
or supervising the work of student employees.LIFE AND ALLIED HEALTH
SCIENCES LIBRARIANUnder the direction of the Head of the Science &
Technology Library, oversees collection development, provides library
related instruction, and serves as liaison to the following academic
departments: Nursing, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, and Allied Health
Technology. Provides reference service at the Science and Technology
Library, including one evening per week. Partners with the College of
Nursing in instructional design and with learning groups. Required
Qualifications* Educational background in one of the life or health
sciences, or academic library, special library, or professional experience
with same* Familiarity with science and technology literature in print and
electronic formats * Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational
skills.Preferred Qualifications* Bachelor's or advanced degree in one of
the life or health sciences * Demonstrated knowledge of specialized life
and health sciences resources in various formats * Reference and/or
instruction experience.PERFORMING ARTS LIBRARIANUnder the direction of the
Head of Collection Management, provides professional service to the School
of Music and the School of Dance, Theater, and Arts Administration. Serves
as liaison to faculty in the development of the library resources to
support the curricula of the schools, provides information fluency
instruction by working with classroom faculty, maintains subject web
pages, and creates tutorials, course web pages, and other materials for
classroom use and study. Represents the Library's interests in local and
state forums for cooperative collection development. Serves as the major
resource person for performing arts reference and research activities,
provides direct reference service at the reference desk and through IM
chat reference and email reference, and works with others on the
organization, processing, and service of particular special subject
collections, including archives of the Smith Publications and of the
Guitar Foundation of America; University Libraries has just received an
NEH grant to digitize early publications from the Guitar Foundation of
America Archives. This UL position supports the University's thriving
academic programs in the performing arts. With more than 400 majors, the
UA School of Music is widely acknowledged as a regional leader in
education and performance, and has been fully accredited by the National
Association of Schools of Music since 1974.The School's extensive graduate
and undergraduate offerings include performance, music education, theory
and composition, jazz, voice, accompanying, music history and literature,
and music technology. Required Qualifications* BA in music* Ability to
work creatively in a challenging, rapidly changing, and fast-paced
environment* Willingness to work weekday evening and weekend
hours.Preferred Qualifications·* Graduate degree in a related discipline*
Experience providing reference service in an academic library setting*
Experience with integrated information literacy programs * Coursework in
or extensive knowledge of performing arts resources * Knowledge of and
ability to utilize a wide range of subject resources, print and electronic

employees.SPECIAL COLLECTIONS CATALOGERUnder the direction of the Head of
the Cataloging Department, catalogs special materials in the collections
of University Libraries, focusing on resources in University Archives and
the Archives of the History of American Psychology. Performs complex
copy-cataloging and original cataloging of rare books, special collections
monographs, archival and manuscript collections, ephemera, artifacts, and
materials in non-print formats following best cataloging practices and
local policies appropriate to the materials. Shares in library-wide
cataloging policy decision making. Documents procedures for the cataloging
manual. Provides training to paraprofessionals as needed. Serves as a
resource person for cataloging and classification questions.Required
Qualifications* Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging/metadata principles,
practices, and trends as evidenced by: Familiarity with cataloging tools
such as AACR2rev, LCRIs, LCSH, Library of Congress Classification, and
MARC * Awareness of and commitment to national and international
cataloging standards, including those pertaining to archive and special
collections materials * Demonstrated awareness of new and emerging
standards and technologies relevant to bibliographic control and metadata
and a commitment to their effective application * Demonstrated
interpersonal and organizational skills * Evidence of excellent computer
skills * Ability to work flexibly in a team environment.Preferred
Qualifications* Experience cataloging rare and/or special collections,
including archival materials * Familiarity with the archival standards for
describing archives, personal papers, and manuscript collections:
Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS)* Formal coursework or
training in manuscripts, ephemera, artifacts, special collections, and/or
archival librarianship * Experience using OCLC Connexion and INNOPAC/
Millennium * Experience applying metadata to finding aids and digital
primary sources utilizing Encoded Archival Description (EAD) or other
appropriate metadata schema * Experience in preservation and conservation
library resources * Reading knowledge of at least one modern Western

month-tenure track appointments. Minimum salary: $40,000. Included is a
generous standard benefits package with 22 days vacation and support for
professional development. A collective bargaining agreement is in place,
