Special Collections Cataloger
The University of Akron seeks a motivated, collegial library
professional for Special Collections Cataloger, a tenure-track position
at the rank of Assistant Professor of Bibliography.
Position Responsibilities
Catalogs special materials in the collections of University Libraries,
focusing on resources in University Archives and the Archives of the
History of American Psychology; performs complex copy-cataloging and
original cataloging of rare books, special collections monographs,
archival and manuscript collections, ephemera, artifacts, and materials
in non-print formats following best cataloging practices and local
policies appropriate to the materials; shares in library-wide cataloging
policy decision making; documents procedures for the cataloging manual;
reports to the Head, Cataloging Department.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidates will be required to: have an MLS/MLIS from an
ALA accredited school; have excellent oral and written communication
skills; have the ability to work well with others and to provide
leadership within the diverse settings of a complex university
organization; have a strong service ethic and demonstrated appreciation
for and effectiveness with a diverse student body; and meet the
University of Akron Libraries' criteria for promotion and tenure which
include conducting research, teaching, participating on library and
university committees, and serving in professional organizations.
* Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging/metadata principles,
practices, and trends as evidenced by:
o Familiarity with cataloging tools such as AACR2rev, LCRIs, LCSH,
Library of Congress Classification, and MARC;
o Awareness of and commitment to national and international
cataloging standards, including those pertaining to archive and special
collections materials;
o Demonstrated awareness of new and emerging standards and
technologies relevant to bibliographic control and metadata and a
commitment to their effective application
* Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills;
* Evidence of excellent computer skills;
* Ability to work flexibly in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience cataloging rare and/or special collections,
including archival materials;
* Familiarity with the archival standards for describing
archives, personal papers, and manuscript collections: Describing
Archives: A Content Standard (DACS)
* Formal coursework or training in manuscripts, ephemera,
artifacts, special collections, and/or archival librarianship;
* Experience using OCLC Connexion and INNOPAC/Millennium;
* Experience applying metadata to finding aids and digital
primary sources utilizing Encoded Archival Description (EAD) or other
appropriate metadata schema;
* Experience in preservation and conservation library resources;
* Reading knowledge of at least one modern Western language,
German preferred.

libraries in Ohio and the State Library of Ohio. The UL includes Bierce
Library, the main library located at the heart of campus, and the
recently renovated and expanded Science and Technology Library located
in the Auburn Science Center. Additionally, UL includes two archival
units: University Archives and the Archives of the History of American
Psychology. UL offers a welcoming state-of-the art work environment.
SALARY, BENEFITS AND APPLICATION
All faculty positions are 12 month-tenure track appointments. Minimum
salary: $40,000. Included is a generous standard benefits package with
22 days vacation and support for professional development. A collective
bargaining agreement is in place, with faculty represented by the
Akron-AAUP.
