DIGITAL LIBRARY PROJECTS MANAGER
                                                                 

** This is a two year term appointment with the possibility of extension.**

The MIT Libraries are seeking a knowledgeable, organized, and self-motivated individual to be responsible for overall planning and management of projects related to DOME, the Libraries' digital library system. The Digital Library Projects Manager will perform detailed analysis of digitization and digital collection projects proposed for DOME which is based on the DSpace platform (http://dspace.org) and related technologies. Analysis includes functional needs assessment and requirements specification for new digital collections; specification of workflows for digitizing or capturing, loading, producing metadata for digital library collections in DOME; developing budgets for new projects; and managing approved projects to completion.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the DSpace Product Manager and working collaboratively with other Libraries staff, the Projects Manager will provide assistance to collection managers who propose to digitize or collect born-digital material for inclusion in DOME, the Libraries' digital library system. The Digital Library Projects Manager is expected to work effectively with a wide range of project stakeholders including: library technical and engineering staff, library management and services staff, other campus experts and customers, outside vendors, and collaborators from other institutions. S/he will manage projects including initial planning and all implementation activities for multiple projects in various stages from conception through completion. The Projects Manager will prepare full proposals for projects proposed by collection staff and develop work plans, schedules and budgets for proposed projects. S/he will maintain documentation for approved projects and prepare status reports. S/he will coordinate all project activities, staff and vendors. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required - College degree. Minimum two years project management experience, working as part of a larger team and with technology staff to implement new services. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong customer service skills.  Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, to successfully balance competing priorities, and to work with inflexible deadlines. Good analytical, problem solving, negotiation, and follow through skills. Ability to work effectively independently. Solid understanding of project management methodology and demonstrated experience using project management tools. Prior experience with digitizing print and other physical materials, and making them available on the Web. Highly Desirable - Knowledge of and/or experience with digital library collections. Some working knowledge of Web standards, XML, and digital formats. Experience with UNIX systems. Demonstrated ability to function as a team member in a consensus-driven environment. Working knowledge and understanding of best practices for digitization, metadata creation, and online derivative creation for a range of source materials. Ability to establish and monitor appropriate metrics for digitization projects to ensure projects are completed within time and budget constraints. Desirable - Understanding of library mission and ability to clearly communicate requirements to key library staff. Experience with vendor selection and contract negotiation.
