Head, Education Library
University of Virginia Library
The University of Virginia Library seeks an innovative,
energetic leader to provide vision and direction for the
Education Library. The successful candidate will
aggressively evaluate, plan and implement services that
will ensure the integration of traditional services and
collections with new technologies in the Education Library
of the future.
The Education Library is located in Ruffner Hall, which
also houses the Curry School of Education. The facility
houses a print collection of approximately 52,000 volumes.
The Education Library provides specialized reference
service, reserve collections, and user education to the
academic community and supports the curriculum of the Curry
School of Education(http://curry.edschool.virginia.edu/)in
higher education, instructional design, clinical psychology
and sports medicine.
Environment: The University of Virginia Library is a
leader in innovative customer service, the development of
digital library initiatives and infrastructure, and in the
strength and variety of its collections. The Library
system consists of twelve libraries, with independent
libraries for health sciences, law, and business. The
libraries support 12,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate
students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The University and the

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Science,
Engineering and Education Services, the Head of the
Education Library is responsible for managing the services,
collections and operations of the Education Library, and
for working with colleagues throughout the library system
to integrate education resources into the services and
collections available for interdisciplinary use by the
University community. The Head of the Education Library
also provides leadership in developing and implementing
innovative services to users; establishes strong
relationships with faculty and students to plan and
implement information and instructional services;
coordinates collection development for education; manages a
staff of one librarian and four paraprofessionals; oversees
the budget and the Education Library facility; works
cooperatively with the Library's administration and library
colleagues to plan and implement library-wide priorities.
Qualifications: Required: Master's degree in library
science or a related field. Three to five years in a
library setting. Supervisory and management experience.
Understanding of current issues in academic libraries and
education collections. Familiarity with effective methods
of instruction and scholarly research. Commitment to
diversity and the ability to work with diverse groups of
users and staff. Knowledge of related digital technologies,
and the ability to effectively utilize information
technology in library activities and operations. Ability to
work effectively in a team environment. Excellent oral,
written and interpersonal communication skills. Strong
service orientation. Commitment to professional growth and
the development and mentoring of library personnel.
Preferred: Background in higher education or education
librarianship
Salary and Benefits: Competitive depending on
qualifications. This position has general faculty status
with excellent benefits, including 22 days of vacation and
TIAA/CREF and other retirement plans. Review of
