Conservation Librarian -- Texas Tech University -- Texas
Library: Conservation Librarian. Major responsibilities: The
Conservation Librarian is responsible for the physical care of a wide
range of research materials in the Southwest Collection/Special
Collections Library. He/she oversees the Hobitzelle Conservation Lab
which supports a comprehensive program to conserve materials held in the
special collections and archives, and performs a variety of treatments
designed to stabilize, conserve and protect them. The Conservator reports
to the Deputy Director and assists in managing and planning the
preservation program, including: establishing conservation priorities
within the Library; planning and managing treatment methods and procedures
for collections; performing treatments on special collections materials;
hiring, training and supervising one full-time conservation technician and
3-4 student workers; assisting in development and coordination of special
projects; ordering conservation supplies; maintaining and analyzing
conservation statistics and treatment records; participating in the
Library's disaster preparedness plan; assisting in exhibits; and serving
as a consultant on preservation to the Texas Tech University community.
The Conservator must communicate and consult with the librarians and
archivists regarding the treatments and processing of special collections
materials. Qualifications: Master's degree in Library Science from an
ALA accredited program. Conservation specialization, training or
certificate. Extensive knowledge of current conservation principles,
practices and procedures. Experience in a conservation program and with
treatment decision-making preferred. Salary and benefits: The position
is a 12-month appointment with a nationally competitive salary. Librarians
and archivists have faculty status and are an integral part of the
academic teaching and research mission of the University. Comprehensive
