Head of Access Services -- George Mason University -- Virginia

George Mason University
Head of Access Services

George Mason University (GMU) is an innovative, entrepreneurial
institution with national distinction in a range of academic fields.
Enrollment is 30,000, with students studying in over 150 degree programs
at campuses in Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and the United
Arab Emirates.
We are seeking a head of access services to lead a newly restructured
department and be responsible for overseeing the policy and planning
aspects of all access services for the university libraries:
circulation, interlibrary loan/document delivery, Washington Research
Library Consortium (WRLC) loan service (patron-initiated borrowing), print
and electronic reserves, and access services for distance education
programs. Incumbent is responsible for integrating all access services
into a seamless suite of services; working with other managers and
department heads in the systems, technical services and research services
areas of the libraries; and to assure high-quality delivery of scholarly
content and research information to all members of the university
community. Head of access services provides the intellectual leadership
for defining an innovative access services agenda that anticipates future
developments in resource sharing and content access in a distributed
environment, with four libraries on three campuses, with close working
relationships with the separately administered school of law library, and
with a newly created campus in the United Arab Emirates (i.e., Ras Al
Khaimah). Incumbent will work closely with counterparts in three
consortia: WRLC, Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) and Association of
Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL).
This position directly supervises three staff members (i.e., one librarian
and two senior paraprofessional staff), oversees a department of 12
full-time employees at Fenwick Library (main library), and assumes overall
building security and collection maintenance there. The incumbent assumes
leadership for building a team approach to access services with other
circulation and access services managers in the Mason library system and
leads coordination of policy and planning through appointment of
appropriate working groups, committees and task forces in consultation
with the libraries' planning council and appropriate administrators. Head
of access services ensures a strong customer service orientation and
prepares reports based on data from integrated systems reporting, as well
as from qualitative methods. The position reports to the associate
university librarian for research, instructional and outreach services.
Required Qualifications: American Library Association (ALA)-accredited
master's in library science, or foreign equivalent; previous substantial
experience in one or more areas of access services in an academic or
research library: circulation, reserves, interlibrary
loan/document delivery, periodicals service or distance education
service delivery; substantial experience with one ILS (integrated library
system); supervisory and management experience; knowledge of copyright law
and its application in academic libraries; excellent communication skills,
both oral and written; excellent collaborative and team skills; and strong
data analysis and interpretive skills.
This is a 12-month professional faculty appointment. Salary is competitive
and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred
qualifications, application instructions and benefits information are
available at GMU's employment page at http://jobs.gmu.edu. All
applications must be submitted online at http://jobs.gmu.edu. Search by
position number FA427z.
George Mason University is an equal opportunity employer encouraging
diversity. Women and minority candidates are particularly encouraged to
apply.
