Student Library Assistant -- Manuscripts
Special Collections Library
The Special Collections Library, located in Hoskins Library, seeks
qualified
students to assist in processing and providing access to our collection
of
historic materials.
Hours: 10-15 hours per week; schedule is negotiable within our business
hours (9:00-5:30, Monday-Friday).
Required Qualifications:
* UT student (undergraduate or graduate) in liberal arts or
information
science
* Strong attention to detail
* Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
* Comfortable working with computers and learning new software
programs
* Must be able to work independently
* Punctual and reliable
* Interest in Tennessee history, manuscripts, or special collections
librarianship
Preferred:
* Prior library work experience
* Research experience in a special collections library
* Prior experience handling rare and fragile materials
* Familiarity with HTML
* Ability to work from 3:30-5:30 pm at least one day per week
Duties/Responsibilities:
* Under limited supervision, arrange and describe collections of
historic manuscripts and archival materials
* Create finding aids using Encoded Archival Description (EAD)
* Work with staff to provide appropriate preservation treatments to
materials as needed
* Work Special Collections afternoon reference desk on assigned day
by
answering the telephone and assisting patrons in the reading room
* Other duties as assigned
