Three leading journalists in East Tennessee will share their views on
how to best pitch stories, stay current with trends in coverage, and
make sure your online newsroom is reporter friendly. Join the Volunteer
Chapter, PRSA, in hearing from these members of the news media:
John Becker, News Anchor, WBIR-TV - John joined WBIR-TV in August 2006
where one of his first assignments was field-anchoring Channel 10's
Hurricane Katrina anniversary coverage from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
Before coming to Knoxville, John reported across Oregon, the U.S.,
Canada, and the Middle East, including winning an Emmy for a documentary
chronicling his embed in Iraq. For two consecutive years, John reported
and produced special projects that won the Oregon Association of
Broadcasters' award for "Best Single News Story."
Amy Nolan, Editor, Greater Knoxville Business Journal - Amy joined the
News Sentinel in 1985, covering the criminal justice system and twice
winning Tennessee's Malcolm Law Award for Investigative Reporting. She
moved to the paper's business staff in the early 1990s and became
business editor, overseeing the expansion to six daily sections. She
served for two years as spokeswoman for Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam
before returning to the News Sentinel as editor of the Greater Knoxville
Business Journal.
Matt Shafer Powell, News Director, WUOT 91.9 FM - Matt joined National
Public Radio member station WUOT in 2002, coming to Knoxville from
Michigan Radio's West Michigan Bureau. Under his leadership, WUOT
recently won four awards from the Public Radio News Directors, Inc., in
the news writing and feature categories. WUOT also was recognized
recently with awards from the Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters
Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the
Radio-Television News Directors Association.
