Archivist and Japanese Studies Positions --  University of Hong Kong --
Hong Kong
 
Founded in 1911, The University of Hong Kong is committed to the highest
international standards of excellence in teaching and research, and has
been at the international forefront of academic scholarship for many
years. Of a number of recent indicators of the University's performance,
one is its ranking at 33 among the top 200 universities in the world by
the UK's Times Higher Education Supplement. The University has a
comprehensive range of study programmes and research disciplines, with
20,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from 50 countries, and a
complement of 1,200 academic members of staff, many of whom are
internationally renowned.1. Assistant Professor in Japanese Studies in the
School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Ref.: RF-2006/2007-674) (from as
soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis. Appointee who has
demonstrated performance will be considered for tenure during the second
three-year contract)Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree; should be
specialists in either history, political economy, sociology, anthropology,
political science or international relations, and show promise of
excellence in teaching and research. The appointee is expected to teach
and conduct research on modern Japan, especially in the context of East

Archivist (at the rank of Assistant Librarian I) in the University
Archives (Ref.: RF-2006/2007-704) (from as soon as possible, on a two-year
fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal)Applicants should have an
advanced degree in archives administration or other relevant fields, such
as library and information science, or a combination of relevant education
and experience; knowledge of archival standards, practice and theory;
knowledge of electronic records management practices and concepts;
excellent oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills;
experience in at least two or more of the following areas: working with
the departments of a large organisation to improve their records
management practice, to assist them with transferring records to an
Archive and overseeing the destruction of records and maintaining and
ensuring compliance with local and national laws pertaining to those
records; and working knowledge of issues that are involved in electronic
records management systems, for instance, e-mail, electronic imaging, web
content management, and electronic theses and dissertations. The incumbent
is expected to be knowledgeable and up-to-date with electronic records
management and archival practice, and also with HKSAR laws and other
policies that affect University records. Duties: under the direction of
the University Archivist, plan and develop policies, and implement the
records management program of the University, including records
scheduling, writing of retention schedules and supervising the
acquisition, or proper destruction of electronic records as well as print;
work in concert with others to investigate, design and implement an
institution-wide, seamless, electronic records management system; be an
integral part of the University's archival program and help to ensure that
University records of enduring administrative, legal, and historical value,
in all formats, are acquired, preserved and made available in the
University Archives; serve as the content curator for the electronic
records of the University Archives; participate in committees within the
University, as well as in professional organizations and the wider
archival and records management community of Hong Kong, East Asia and the

At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 16% of gross income. The
appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University
contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic
salary, as well as leave, and medical/dental benefits. Housing benefits
will be provided as applicable.For post (1), annual salary for Assistant
Professorship will be in the range of HK$451,980 - 698,520 (approx.
US$1=HK$7.8) (subject to review from time to time at the entire discretion
of the University). For post (2), a highly competitive salary commensurate
with qualifications and experience will be offered. As the post is
normally restricted to local advertisement only, the University is not
able to offer a relocation assistance package (i.e. without temporary
housing accommodation or a passage/baggage allowance) to the successful
