George Mason University
Head of Educational Services

George Mason University, a Carnegie Research University (High Research
Activity), is an innovative, entrepreneurial institution with national
distinction in a range of academic fields. Enrollment is 30,000, with
students in over 150 degree programs. The libraries are experiencing a
period of significant growth in funding, staffing and facilities, and were
identified in the university's long-range planning process as critical to
the university's expanding role as a research institution. 
The George Mason University Libraries seeks an energetic, articulate and
collaborative librarian to lead the newly created Educational Services
Unit in the Libraries. This department will be the lead unit in the
libraries and the university for creating an enterprise-level research
education program, focused on infusing information fluency and research
skills throughout the curriculum. Incumbent will seek opportunities for
collaboration across the university to promote information fluency, and
will work closely with other campus units and initiatives focused on
teaching and learning improvement, technology integration into the
curriculum, assessment and student life. Promotes expertise with
instructional design and application of Web-based instructional
technologies in the libraries through collaboration with the university's
Instructional Resource Center; will collaborate with other units in the
planned Center for Digital Fluency, focused on combining the student
experience technologies with curriculum-based information fluency; will
connect the libraries' instruction program with university-wide
discussions and initiatives concerning undergraduate research, critical
thinking, curriculum design, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Incumbent will be the lead research officer for information literacy and
information fluency in the libraries and the university. 
Manages a department consisting of the E-Learning Librarian and two
classified staff; and will lead and coordinate the learning initiatives,
projects and activities of 20+ liaison librarians and a number of
classified staff located in four libraries. Position reports to the
Associate University Librarian for Research, Instructional and Outreach
Services. 
Qualifications 
Required&#58; ALA-accredited MLS, or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent;
significant demonstrated professional experience in an academic library;
demonstrated teaching ability; knowledge of information literacy concepts
and issues; knowledge of learning theories and a range of pedagogies;
familiarity with trends in higher education related to teaching and
learning, including the scholarship of teaching and learning; experience
with project management, instructional design and curriculum mapping;
experience with Web-based instructional technologies; able to conduct
research and assessment studies; and demonstrated leadership ability.
Preferred&#58; second master's degree in relevant subject field such as
education, higher education, educational psychology, instructional design,
or instructional technology. 
This is a 12-month professional faculty appointment. Salary is competitive
and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits
