Professional Position Posting
Librarian for Geospatial Information, Cartographic Resources, Geography,
and Urban Planning 

Position Duties
Under the general supervision of the Head of Collections, Research &
Instructional Services, (CRIS) the incumbent is responsible for the
geospatial data collections in the social sciences and humanities and
developing and managing the library's map collections.  
Geospatial Data Collections and GIS Resource Center and Services
GIS needs assessments across campus and develops appropriate goals to meet
needs and recommend programmatic directions for data collections and
services.  With the Academic Technology Services and librarians in the
Biomedical and Science and Engineering Libraries develops digital
geospatial data programs and coordinated GIS services.  Collects and
delivers digital geospatial data for social sciences and humanities.
Manages the GIS Resource Center providing access to an array of ESRI
software products including ArcGIS.  Applies new techniques to the
management and library services related to geospatial information.
Assesses training needs and provides training to users on geospatial
analysis tools including GIS.  Works with faculty to implement GIS-related
and geospatial data related assignments in courses and prepares datasets to
support course assignments. Develops a campus archive of digital geospatial
data and promotes the library's geospatial data collection to users.  
Cartographic Collections and Collections in Geography and Urban Planning 
Manages and develops the collection of cartographic resources and the
collection.  Selects materials for acquisition, manages serials, monitors
approval plans, and budgets for acquired and licensed resources. 
Maintains development policies.   Conducts evaluation of the collections
and assesses collections in relation to programmatic needs.  Evaluates
gift materials, makes preservation decisions, and selects materials for
shelving at the Southern Regional Library Facility.  Develops web-based
resources to promote the collections and provide support for information
literacy.  Initiates and leads digitization projects.  Hires, trains, and
supervises support staff and students.  Oversees the operation of the
Bruman Map Collection and its associated reading room. Works with the
Department Head and the Library Development Office to assist in funding. 
Represents the library at meetings of the UC&#47;Stanford Map Libraries
Group meetings.  Works with counterparts in the UC system to build and
manage collections, including coordinating licensing and trials of digital
resources.  Assesses collections available at other universities and
prioritize digitization of assets unique to UCLA.  Assists faculty in
identifying sources outside of UCLA for mapping needs.
Public Service, Information Literacy and Instruction
Delivers reference services for map collections.  Holds office hours for
faculty and students and is available to consult with librarians and
general users. Coordinates the development and delivery of high quality
outreach and instructional services to faculty, students, scholars and
clients. Works closely with faculty to design and provide
course-integrated instruction to upper division and graduate classes
teaching skills.  Develops web-based resources in support of
subject-specific information literacy.  Provides training to colleagues in
the methodologies and techniques of answering requests for assistance in
using the collections.  Keeps abreast of issues in scholarly publishing
and communication including copyright, open access, and institutional
repositories.  Serves as a member of the CRIS Social Sciences, Humanities,
and Interdisciplinary Studies Subject Section.  Working with the
Information Literacy Functional Area Team, assists in the design, delivery
and assessment of in-person and Web-based information literacy sessions
targeting upper division undergraduates and graduate students. 
Required Qualifications
ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR
significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree OR equivalent
education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional
library education and&#47;or experience).  Graduate degree in Geography,
Urban Planning, or related discipline and research level knowledge of the
subject disciplines of Geography and Urban Planning.  Knowledge and
understanding of research needs and the organization of scholarly
materials in Geography and Urban Planning.  Experience working in an
academic or research library map collection and demonstrated knowledge of
how maps can be employed to answer reference questions and research needs.
 Extensive knowledge of how map collections can be organized according to
the LCG schedule and knowledge and experience in how geospatial data and
cartographic materials are published (both digital and print). 
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in all aspects of geospatial data
collection, map librarianship, and the provision of geographic information
systems within an academic library setting.  Advanced knowledge of
technology related to geospatial informatics and GIS.  Ability to provide
geospatial data and GIS segments for instruction.  Ability to provide
reference service and instruction for the cartographic resources in a
variety of situations including classroom settings, small group settings,
and one on one consultations.  Knowledge and understanding of scholarly
research, publishers, and publishing and the economics of scholarly
publishing and issues in scholarly communication.  Demonstrated
proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the
Web, and library-relevant information technology applications.  Working
knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft
Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software. 
Excellent analytical, organizational, time and project management skills. 
Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. 
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a
team member and independently and to promote teamwork among colleagues. 
Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace
and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population.
Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment

Desired Qualifications
Knowledge and understanding of current trends in information technology as
they apply to collection development and management and the provision of
reference and research services in the social sciences and humanities. 
Knowledge of copyright issues in digital scholarship and teaching. 
Experience with the design, provision and evaluation of information
literacy programs for upper division and graduate students.  Demonstrated
commitment to providing excellent public services in an academic or
research library.  Working&#47;reading knowledge of one or more foreign
languages.  
Salary and Benefits
Associate Librarian Rank ($44,736 - Librarian $85,740).  Salary and
appointment level based on experience and qualifications.  UC has an
excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group health,
dental, vision, and life insurance plans in addition to other benefits. 
Relocation assistance is provided.
