Metadata Librarian --  Washington University in St. Louis -- Missouri
 

The Washington University Libraries in St. Louis are seeking an
innovative, energetic individual to be responsible for ongoing multiple
aspects of metadata as a Digital Library Services team member for the
growing digital library.  The person chosen will lead the effort, with the
Digital Library Team Subcommittee on Metadata, to develop and promote
metadata and related standards for the Washington University digital
library and archival DAMS.  Will develop and adapt other localized schemes
(i.e., system-specific schemes) as needed; contribute to digital object
modeling and workflows as they relate to metadata creation for digital
projects, for internal (library) and external (faculty and other) digital
projects; provide excellent customer service to all clients; document
developed standards and workflows; monitor trends on metadata issues and
inform colleagues about key developments; monitor issues of digital asset
metadata migration, interoperability and curation, and make
recommendations for emerging best practices in these areas.  Will serve on
library committees as needed and reports to the Director of the Digital
Library.
QUALIFICATIONS&#58;  Required -MLS (MLIS) degree from an ALA accredited
library school, or other advanced degree and&#47;or equivalent experience.
 Knowledge of principles and practices in organizing information, including
key metadata format and content standards.  Knowledge of and&#47;or
experience with two of the following metadata standards&#58; OAI, EAD,
MODS, METS, VRACore, RDF, and&#47;or relevant thesauri or ontologies. 
Experience with HTML and related web technologies.  Advanced computer
literacy including experience with the Microsoft Office suite. Strong
customer service experience &#47; orientation and commitment to a culture
of assessment.  Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with
staff and users at all levels, in both verbal and written communications. 
Excellent analytic and problem solving skills, including an aptitude for
complex, analytical, and detailed work.  Ability to plan, coordinate, and
implement projects and to participate successfully in multiple,
simultaneous projects.  Excellent organizational skills.  Ability to work
independently as well as collegially in a rapidly changing environment
with diverse library staff members, as well as faculty members and other
external customers.  Preferred - Knowledge of a wide variety of metadata
standards and emerging digital library standards and best practices. 
Experience working with one or more digital library asset management
systems, such as LUNA, DLXS, CONTENTdm, DSpace, Fedora, etc.  Experience
with CSS, XML and XSLT and XML-native databases.  Experience with standard
HTML and XSL tools such as Dreamweaver, oXygen, EMACS etc.  Knowledge of
UNIX &#47; Linux operating systems and tools.  One year experience in
library, museum, or academic setting.  Experience with workflow analysis
and project management.
