Instructor&#47;Assistant or Associate Professor&#47;Digital Initiatives
Librarian

University Library

The University Library at Appalachian State University invites
applications from innovative and proactive individuals to join a library
seeking excellence.  The position is a Digital Initiatives Librarian.  The
successful candidate will play a leading role in planning and developing
the web interface and delivering digital materials to students and
scholars both on campus and off campus.
Responsibilities
Plans and implements digital initiatives primarily involving Special
Collections materials.  Leads in developing the web interface and
delivering digital materials to students and scholars using emerging
information technologies and standards-based methods.    Maintains
effective access to digital content and develops preservation strategies
for a variety of electronic media.  Serves as the expert on new
technologies, metadata schemas and developments in digital applications
including development of an institutional repository.  Manages
digitization projects, supervises student workers and coordinates external
contracts.  Contributes to grant writing for digitization projects. A
priority of this position is developing and maintaining the Documenting
Appalachia digital library.  This is a new position in a highly
collaborative environment.
Qualifications
Required
&middot;An American Library Association accredited master's degree or an
appropriate earned advanced degree for archival science.
&middot;Experience digitizing and providing access to special or archival
collections. 
&middot;Knowledge of digital archiving and preservation trends.  
&middot;Knowledge of standards-based metadata schemes.  
&middot;Evidence of innovation using emerging information technologies,
including the ability to develop concepts from idea to implementation.  
&middot;Experience with the creation and capture of a wide variety of
digital formats. 
&middot;Demonstrated successful project management experience.  
&middot;Knowledge of preservation issues in handling rare and fragile
materials.  
&middot;Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred
&middot;Experience using ContentDM or other content management systems.  
&middot;Familiarity with large-scale digital library projects such as
digitization of cultural heritage materials.  
&middot;Knowledge of instructional design and technologies.  
&middot;Grant writing experience.  
&middot;Supervisory experience.
&middot;Life experiences similar to those of underrepresented populations
at Appalachian.  The Library strongly encourages applications from members
of ethnic and racial groups representative of Appalachian's student
minorities, principally African American, Hispanic Americans, Native
Americans and Asian Americans.
This twelve-month tenure track position will be available in the summer of
2007.  The position may be filled at the Instructor, Assistant Professor,
or Associate Professor ranks.  Rank as an Assistant or Associate Professor
and continued employment beyond the Instructor term requires an advanced
degree in addition to the MLS.  Salary and rank are determined on the
basis of qualifications and experience.  Minimum salaries for the ranks
are&#58;  Instructor $39,000, Assistant Professor $42,000, and Associate
Professor $45,000.
