Subject: [metadataLibrarians] Metadata Librarian - Bucknell
University,Lewisburg PA

Job Posting: Metadata Librarian

Bucknell University's Information Services & Resources (ISR), a merged
library and information technology organization, is looking for an
individual to work with us as we organize and provide access to
Bucknell's
growing digital collections. This individual will be responsible for
metadata and associated authority control, quality control, knowledge of
changing metadata standards, and other duties associated with the
creation
and maintenance of data related to both digital and print materials.
While
the primary focus of the work will be working with metadata for digital
objects, this individual will also serve as the resident authority on
traditional cataloging standards and emerging trends related to the
intellectual access and organization of information.

The Metadata Librarian is part of ISR's Digital Initiatives Group and
will
report the Digital Initiatives Group Leader. S/he will work closely with
the
Digital Projects Technologist, members of the Technical Services
department,
and the Library Systems department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:
- Maintaining knowledge of national and international descriptive,
technical, and administrative metadata standards. Interpreting and
adapting
those standards for local needs.
- Maintaining knowledge of national and international cataloging
standards
and best practices. Providing support for cataloging books and
electronic
resources. Staying abreast of changes in traditional cataloging (i.e.,
the
shift from MARC/AACR2 to RDA). Leading conversations within ISR related
to
these changes in information organization.
- Selecting the appropriate metadata scheme for digital projects.
- Coordinating the creation of metadata and long-term maintenance of
data
for projects. Working with faculty, staff, students, and administrators
to
establish and implement best practices for individual collections.
- Establishing workflows for metadata projects. Coordinating metadata
work
assigned to other staff and student workers. Overseeing training on
related
software and tasks.
- Experimenting with promising new metadata/cataloging tools or
technologies. Developing strategies for integrating new technologies and
services into the existing framework.
- Seeking to create more efficient workflows for data creation,
manipulation, clean-up and storage. Exploring, recommending, and
implementing processes to automate work.
- Staying abreast of changes in library systems such as the integrated
library system and federated search systems. Participating in ISR groups
who
are seeking to enhance existing systems and considering tools for future
implementation.
- Anticipating future trends in an evolving digital environment.
Maintaining
current awareness of national and international developments affecting
metadata, cataloging, and information retrieval. Attending professional
meetings and workshops to monitor changes in metadata standards and
practices.

Secondary responsibilities include:
- Representing the Digital Initiatives Group and ISR by serving on
university-wide and ISR committees as appropriate.
- Participating in training campus users on digital object storage,
presentation, and cataloging software. Several tools currently in use
include Luna Insight and Inscribe, ARTstor, ImageDB (a locally-developed
image database tool), Picasa, and DSpace.
- Assisting with grant submissions for digital project proposals.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
- Master's degree in Library Science or Information Science.
- Minimum of two years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of existing and developing metadata schemas, standards, and
protocols such as Dublin Core, VRA Core, LOM, MODS, METS, CCO, and
OAI-PMH;
traditional cataloging rules and standards including MARC and AACR2;
subject
thesauri such as LC subject headings, ULAN, AAT, TGN, and MeSH; emerging
standards such as RDA.
- Ability to adapt to changing digital technologies and metadata
standards.
- Proficiency in standard computer applications, spreadsheets,
databases,
integrated library systems, the Internet, as well as traditional library
resources.
- The ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- The ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and in
teams.

About the Organization
In August 1997 Bucknell University integrated its library and computing
organizations to form Information Services and Resources (ISR). ISR
focuses
on strengthening natural areas of collaboration and creating synergies
among
staff members. We strive to create an information-rich environment for
the
campus, and enjoy a strong service reputation. ISR is committed to
supporting the professional development of its approximately 85 staff
members.

Bucknell is a highly selective, predominantly undergraduate residential
university with strong liberal arts and professional programs. There are
approximately 3400 undergraduates and 150 master's degree students. The
campus is in a beautiful rural setting adjacent to the Susquehanna
River.
Harrisburg and State College (home of Penn State University) are about
an
hour away; New York, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh
are approximately a three to four hours drive. The university supports
an
active program of cultural events and opportunities for recreation.

Contact Information
To learn more about our organization, explore ISR's website -
http://www.bucknell.edu/isr. Of particular interest are our vision and
values, which can be found by selecting "About ISR".

For maximum consideration, post a cover letter, resume and names of
three
references by midnight, April 16, 2007 to "Jobs at Bucknell" -
http://www.bucknell.edu/x504.xml. Bucknell encourages applications from
women and members of minority groups (EEO/AA).
