Library&#58; Director, John Cotton Dana Library&#58; The Rutgers
University Libraries seek an innovative and experienced library
administrator to fill the position of Director of the John Cotton Dana
Library on the Newark Campus of Rutgers University. The Newark Campus is a
doctoral-granting research institution classified as a Carnegie Research
University with high research activity (RU&#47;H). There are doctoral
programs in public administration, urban systems, global affairs,
management, American studies, biology, chemistry, psychology, applied
physics, mathematical sciences, integrative neuroscience, nursing and
criminal justice. Campus research centers include the Joseph C. Cornwall
Center for Metropolitan Studies, the Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and
the Modern Experience and the National Center for Public Productivity.
There are more than 3,580 graduates and some 6,500 undergraduate students.
The Newark Campus educates students from more than 70 nations and is the
nation's most diverse national university campus.  Reporting to the
University Librarian, the Director will serve on the University
Librarian's Cabinet, the Libraries' senior management team and participate
in system-wide planning, development and innovation. Will have direct
management responsibility, including recruitment, appointment, evaluation
and budget authority at Dana Library and the Institute of Jazz Studies for
13 library faculty and 25 staff with budget of $2.7 million. Provides
leadership in planning, budgeting, professional development and training,
information literacy and in developing strategic resources, facilities and
services for students and faculty. Oversees, supports and nurtures the
world-renowned Institute of Jazz Studies. Champions the Rutgers University
Libraries system-wide resources and services and the Institute of Jazz
Studies with deans, chairs and faculty on the Newark Campus, and with
alumni, donors, foundations and other funding sources. Articulates and
supports a strong sense of community on the campus, with other Newark
cultural institutions, and in the Libraries. A strong record of leadership
and accomplishment in an academic or research library with a minimum of
five years' of increasingly responsible administrative experience is
required. Of particular importance will be ability to manage the Dana
Library within a large and complex organization in a rapidly changing
technological environment, to serve the research and information needs of
a diverse population of students and scholars, to engage the Dana Library
with the campus's urban mission and to maintain strong ties to the Newark
community. Key skills include effective communications and outreach with
faculty, administration, students and alumni; collaboration and consensus
building; mentoring; innovation; advocacy; strategic planning; budgeting;
ability to delegate effectively; and fundraising. The Director is a senior
faculty member and administrator and plays a critical role in the
appointment, reappointment and promotion of library faculty on the campus
and must qualify for tenure in the library faculty. The successful
candidate will have a Master's degree from an ALA accredited institution,
an advanced degree is preferred; and have a strong record in scholarship,
