Assistant Dean for Digital Futures and Technical Services --  Washington

Notice of Vacancy - Washington State University Libraries, Pullman, WA
Assistant Dean for Digital Futures and Technical Services
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES&#58;
The Assistant Dean for Digital Futures and Technical Services is
responsible for providing vision and leadership that both reflects current
needs and anticipates future trends in the evolving library and information
environment.  This position handles oversight for the functional areas of
collections, acquisitions, cataloging, preservation, serials, electronic
resources, and systems.  The Assistant Dean will support collaboration
across the units of the Pullman libraries and with WSU sites around the
state in consonance with the Libraries' Strategic Plan and WSU's
land-grant institution status.  The Assistant Dean will actively
participate in the expansion and maintenance of the WSU Libraries' digital
initiatives, including fundraising and long-term planning.  The Assistant
Dean promotes a working environment in which all employees are supported
in developing their skills so that they can contribute to the maximum of
their ability, and facilitates the WSU Libraries' efforts in building an
open, collaborative organization.  This full-time, 12-month position
reports to the Dean of Libraries.
 
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES&#58;
Librarians are appointed as members of the Washington State University
faculty and are expected to participate actively in the University's
instructional, research, and service programs.  All privileges,
obligations, and research responsibilities of faculty are inherent in such
membership.  Librarians are ranked in grades 2, 3, and 4, equivalent to the
academic ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. 
A progressive record of professional&#47;scholarly achievement is expected
of all librarians.
ENVIRONMENT&#58;
Washington State University is a land-grant university founded in 1890
with an overall enrollment of approximately 21,000 students.  The main
campus is located in Pullman, a town of 26,000 in the Palouse region of
southeastern Washington.  There are also three regional campuses located
in Spokane, Vancouver, and Tri-Cities.  The Washington State University
Libraries belong to the Association of Research Libraries and the Greater
Western Library Alliance. The Libraries have holdings of over two million
volumes and access to a wide range of electronic resources.  In addition,
the Libraries belong to the Orbis Cascade Alliance which provides a
cooperative catalog and lending service. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS&#58;  
REQUIRED&#58; ALA-accredited masters' degree in library&#47;information
science; successful record of at least 5 years of substantial
administrative or management experience in information technology
and&#47;or technical services in an academic library, including experience
with personnel supervision at various levels and budgeting; experience with
substantive digital projects and initiatives, such as digital repositories,
federated search, and web-based services; excellent interpersonal and
collaborative oral and written communication skills.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following&#58;  experience
in leadership, mentoring, and motivation; comprehensive knowledge of a
large library's varied functions; a history of positive interaction with
faculty, staff, students, and administrators; understanding of current
issues and trends facing research libraries, including the rapid changes
in providing access to digital and physical materials to a wide range of
constituents; demonstrated commitment to diversity; a progressive record
of publication and professional participation that meets the criteria for
tenure at WSU.
PREFERRED&#58; Experience with the following&#58; interaction among
different units; facilitation of group decision-making and planning;
assessment of services and user needs; fundraising and resource
development; demonstrated support for employee development; additional
advanced degree.
SALARY&#58;  From $70,000, commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
RANK&#58; Tenured faculty status, Librarian 3 or 4, commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
