Faculty opening, Library / Information Science Program, College of St.
Catherine
The MLIS program at the College of St. Catherine, a college committed
to academic excellence and rigorous intellectual inquiry, is seeking
one dynamic, creative teacher to join our graduate faculty. The
College is an undergraduate women's liberal arts college with nine
coeducational graduate programs in disciplines that benefit from its
liberal arts base. Consistent with the college's Catholic identity,
its commitment to women, diversity and social justice, preference will
be given to candidates who manifest these themes in their teaching,
research and service. Because of its mission and history, St. Kate's
offers a unique graduate experience that fosters the development of
critical-thinking, decision-making, and ethical leadership skills.
This rolling contract position occurs during our process of candidacy
for ALA-accreditation, a process that is intended to result in our
being the only fully accredited independent MLIS program in Minnesota.
We are seeking an individual to teach in and coordinate the
department's School Library Media Program, including supervision of
the student teaching component. One-third of the position is
administrative; two-thirds is instructional. Because the College
places strong emphasis on teaching, individuals demonstrating
potential for excellence in teaching and ability to relate their
research to their teaching are especially invited to apply.
Anticipated starting date is August 1, 2007.
Required qualifications:
ALA-accredited MLS with additional coursework at the doctoral level;
college-level teaching experience; ability to teach theory and
practice in the school library media field as well as relevant
technical applications, peripherals, hardware and software;
publications; participation in professional organizations; experience
in K-12 education; and knowledge of information literacy and
technology standards.
Preferred qualifications:
Doctorate in librarianship or related field in hand at the time of
appointment, evidence of a broad perspective in the field of
librarianship, particularly school library media services; practical
library experience.
Essential position responsibilities: Teach 4 courses per year at the
master's level; coordinate the school library media program; supervise
student teaching; contribute to the development of the program; advise
school library media students; engage in research and in public
dissemination of research findings; work cooperatively with the
Education Department at the College of St. Catherine; engage in the
broad library community.
Additional information:
Our masters program currently enrolls 285 students. The program, now
affiliated with Dominican University, received candidacy status in
March 2005, with full accreditation by the American Library
Association of an independent program anticipated by January 2009. We
are housed in the new campus learning commons adjacent to the library.
Our facilities include four computer labs and an interactive classroom
with distance education capabilities.
The College is located in the metropolitan Twin Cities, an area with
outstanding cultural and educational institutions serving a diverse
population. This library-rich environment has an historically strong
ethos of cooperation and sharing between libraries of all types. One
of the outstanding advantages of the St. Catherine's MLIS program for
both students and faculty is the opportunity for partnerships with
libraries, museums, archives, theaters, etc., both in teaching and
research. Faculty also have access to the nearby University of
Minnesota, one of the premiere research institutions in the nation.
The College of St. Catherine is building a culturally diverse faculty
and strongly encourages applications from candidates who can
contribute to that diversity. The College is an Equal Opportunity
employer. As an example of our commitment to diversity, visit the
