Subject: [metadataLibrarians] Professional Opportunity - Metadata
Librarian at Medical Library, Yale University

Hi all,

FYI
Metadata Librarian
Cushing/Whitney Medical Library
Yale University
Rank: LII - LIII

THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 12.5 million volumes
housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and
departmental libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of
nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest
caliber of faculty and students, serve on committees and participate
in other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library
resources, from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding
network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's
distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous digital
initiatives designed to provide access to a full array of scholarly
information. For additional information on the Yale University
Library, please visit the Library's Web site at:

THE MEDICAL LIBRARY
The Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, with a
collection of over 450,000 volumes, over 7,200 electronic journals
and a wide range of state-of-the-art electronic services, serves the
information needs of the Yale Schools of Medicine, Epidemiology &
Public Health, and Nursing; the Yale-New Haven Hospital; and other
affiliated institutions of the Yale-New Haven Medical Center. The
Medical Library has migrated from print journals to mostly online
journals. The Library staff work together as a team to provide
responsive and effective support to meet the Medical Center's
missions of research, education, patient care and service. There is a
continuing effort to use technology to facilitate patron access to
information from library, campus, or remote locations and to deliver
education sessions in person and online. The Medical Library is
committed to excellence and quality service.
The Medical Library contains a Historical Library with a large and
unique collection of rare medical books, medical journals to 1920,
pamphlets, prints, and photographs, as well as current works on the
history of medicine. Digitization projects are underway to make these
materials freely available on the Web.

THE POSITION
Under the general direction of the Head of Collection Development and
Management, the Metadata Librarian leads metadata and cataloging
production work for the Medical Library and represents the Medical

The Metadata Librarian creates descriptive and structural metadata
across a wide range of materials (photographs, prints, rare books,
databases, etc.) to support the Medical Library's digital library;
develops work flows and procedures for the support of metadata
creation; and keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging and digital
library metadata standards and trends. The Metadata Librarian does
original cataloging for books and other formats; supervises the copy
cataloger and acts as the cataloging resource person for staff
members of the Medical and Epidemiology & Public Health Libraries;
