Director for Special Collections --  Virginia Tech -- Virginia
 
Director for Special Collections
Virginia Tech's University Libraries (http://www.lib.vt.edu , Library
Annual reports http://www.lib.vt.edu/services/aboutlibs.html) invites
applications and nominations for the position of Director for Special
Collections. This is a new position in the Libraries. Special Collections
is currently part of the Digital Library and Archives (DLA
http://scholar.lib.vt.edu/ ). With this appointment Special Collections
will become an independent, director level unit in the Libraries. We
expect the continuation of strong partnerships and collaboration between
Special Collections and DLA on projects and services, and active
collaborations with the Libraries Research and Instructional Services unit
in support of the Libraries instructional and outreach goals. We are
looking for a creative, enthusiastic, results-oriented leader to work with
library and university faculty and staff to identify, create, deliver, and
assess user-focused services to support the discovery, exchange, and
advancement of ideas in the Virginia Tech community. We want an individual
knowledgeable of both traditional and digital methods associated with
acquiring, preserving, describing, promoting, and making easily accessible
the resources of Special Collections.The Director reports to the Dean of
the Library and is a member of the Dean's Library Advisory Council.
RESPONSIBILITIESThe Director provides leadership for a unit which, in
addition to the Director position, will be allocated 4 FTE faculty
positions, 2 FTE staff, and a .5FTE graduate research assistant supported
by the Library and the History Department. The Director will be expected
to:* Provide leadership, set priorities, and assign responsibilities for
acquiring, organizing, preserving, making accessible, and promoting
Special Collections and University Archives resources* Evaluate faculty
and staff* Establish and continually update a strategic plan for the unit*
Coordinate the delivery of reference and instructional services for the
unit* Coordinate outreach and information dissemination activities of the
unit (service publications, coordination with overall library Web,
targeted promotion of library resources, targeted tutorials, news
releases)* Mentor faculty and staff to encourage professional growth
supportive of the library's mission * Direct the development,
implementation, and assessment of new services, and assess existing
services * Use assessment as a means of continuous service improvement
throughout the unit* Participate in developmental and operational work of
the library's operating team for its integrated system (Innovative
Interfaces)* Collaborate with other Special Collections directors and with
the larger library community within the state, across the country, and
internationally* Collaborate with the Libraries' Digital Library and
Archives Department* Work with the dean and the library development
officer on library fundraising activitiesMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * MLS
from ALA accredited library school or the equivalent in archival
administration* Demonstrated leadership experience of library faculty &
staff in special collections or archives in a medium to large academic
library in a doctorate granting institution* Evidence of professional
accomplishments, publications, and experience * Evidence of a strategic
understanding of important university and library issues of the 21st
century* Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills* Evidence of excellent
communication skills* Experience in applying MARC and other meta scheme
alternatives as appropriate to Special Collections projects * Evidence of
partnering in library-related projects with other university units*
Evidence of the ability to create productive working relationships within
the library and between the library and the university faculty, students,
and staff. * Technical skills for the application of appropriate
technologies in support of innovative library services.PREFERRED
QUALIFICATIONS: * Doctoral degree or progress toward the doctorate in an
academic or professional discipline* Five or more years of recent &
progressive experience leadership of library faculty & staff in specials
collections or archives in a medium to large academic library in a
doctorate granting institution * Fund-raising experience in an academic
environment* Grant application and management experience* Academic work
relevant to one of the department's collection highlights: Appalachian
studies, Civil War studies, women in architecture, regional rail
transportation, or aerospace.SALARY/BENEFITS:* Twelve-month faculty
appointment; salary guided by ARL average for similar positions.* For
