Head, Asia Library -- University of Michigan at Ann Arbor -- Michigan
HEAD, ASIA LIBRARY
Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for
Public Services, the Head provides innovative and strategic leadership for
the University's Asia Library in support of its role as a premier resource
for East Asian Studies at the University of Michigan. The Head of the Asia
Library is responsible for ensuring that excellent user-centered services
meet the constantly evolving needs of the University's large and diverse
user community, for informing the campus and broader community of the Asia
Library's resources and services, and for providing executive oversight of
substantial collection, revenue and personnel. The University of
Michigan's Asia Library has a long and distinguished tradition of building
and providing access to comprehensive collections (both print and, more
recently, electronic) of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean on East Asia. These
collections are particularly strong in the humanities and social sciences
and support doctoral level studies in those areas. The Asia Library has a
strong history of successful partnerships with the College of Literature,
Science, and the Arts, the International Institute, the Center for Chinese
Studies, the Center for Japanese Studies, the Korean Studies Program, and
the China Data Center. The Asia Library is considered to be among the top
five libraries of its kind in the United States. The Asia Library has also
been a leader in the integration of information technology into its
processes and services as evidenced by the nearly 2,000 electronic CJK
resources. The Head of the Asia Library assumes leadership at a
transformative period in the University's transition to digitally-defined
libraries and has a unique opportunity to participate in the creation of
visionary programs and services. Initiatives include Michigan's
partnership with Google to digitize the University Library
(http://www.lib.umich.edu) collections and Deep Blue, the U-M
institutional repository. The University of Michigan, a leader in
undergraduate and graduate education and one of the world's premier

environment. Collaboration among the various centers and programs engaged
