Metadata Specialist
(Programmer Analyst B)

BASIC PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Reporting to the Director, Goldstein Information Processing Center
(IPC), supports the work of IPC in providing access to library materials
in all formats including journals, books, newspapers, video recordings,
microforms, and electronic resources.   Extracts and loads files of
metadata records.  Works on special projects to edit metadata records.
  Creates and runs Voyager reports.   Provides specialized software
support.   Coordinates work with the Information Technology and Digital
Development (iTaDD) department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

30%	1.      Works with files of metadata records, including
machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records and non-MARC records, and
descriptive, technical, administrative, preservation and other metadata.
   Extracts records for export to vendors and/or loading in other
systems.   Loads files provided by vendors into local systems, including
the Franklin/Voyager database, following standards and specifications.

25%	2.     Creates programs and scripts to edit files of metadata
records.  Projects may include enhancing quality of the records,
transforming the metadata from one standard to another, and/or moving
data from one local system to another.   Works with professional staff
to define and revise project expectations.

20%	3.      Creates and runs periodic and one time reports using
data
from the Voyager system.  Reports may include statistics and/or lists of
items.   Works with professional staff to define and revise report
expectations, including content and formatting.

15%	4.      Provides software support for the specialized products
used
by the staff of the IPC, including Voyager clients, RLIN21, OCLC
Connexion, SFX, and BIS (binding).


10%	5.      Coordinates activities with Information Technology and
Digital Development (iTaDD) department, and may participate in joint
projects.   Keeps abreast of new technologies and provides information
to the IPC Director and Department Heads on ways technology could
improve the work of the IPC.  Performs other related duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:

BA/BS degree in computing or information science, or equivalent in
theory and practice. Two or more years of progressively responsible work
experience.   Knowledge of databases and their applications.   SQL
experience preferred.  Ability to work with a wide variety of
colleagues, both technical and non-technical.  Excellent spoken/written
communication skills required.  Good time management skills, including
the ability to manage multiple projects of varying duration.   Interest
in, or familiarity with, academic library operations preferred.
