In past years, Golden Key members have taken advantage
of opportunities in our British Studies Program, and
we wanted to let you and your members know about this
year's program. The University of Southern Mississippi will again
offer students an opportunity to study in London
through five-week courses offered through the British
Studies Program. To get a brochure and application for
the program, send your name and snailmail address to:

Each course carries six hours of undergraduate or
graduate credit and is offered from July 7,
2005-August 7, 2005, in London. USM offers the courses through a
consortium of 12 Southeastern schools. Last year more
than 150 students took part in the program, which is
the largest London-based international program in the
U.K. (Note: Students may take only one course.)

Students can choose from among the following courses:

Anthropology/Sociology
Art History
International Business
Computer Science
ENGLISH: Jane Austen
ENGLISH: King Arthur
ENGLISH: Shakespeare
Geography
HISTORY: Royal Britain
HISTORY: WWII
Intercultural Communication
Journalism
London
Music
Photography
Political Science
Speech & Hearing
Theatre

These are not typical classroom courses. Students
learn by hearing from British experts and by touring
sites relevant to their subject. Students in the
journalism course, for example, will visit British
media institutions (The Sun, BBC, etc.) and hear
lectures from experts in British media. Theatre
students meet top-flight actors and directors and
attend stage performances all over London. Music
students experience London's exciting music scene
first-hand. The World War II students visit Normandy
beaches. You get the idea.

Courses meet four days a week to allow ample time for
touring. Students typically visit two or three other
countries in the course of their five-week stay.

You can get financial aid just as if this were a
course you were taking in the U.S. You apply through
the financial aid office. There are no prerequisites
for the courses.

We stay in central London in King's College at one of
their dormitories. The rooms are small, but everyone
gets a private room with fridge and private bath. Each
five flats share a kitchen. While few folks do a lot
of cooking, the kitchen is handy. The dorm has a large
courtyard that is the social center of the program.
Students quickly make friends with the folks in their
class as well as students from across the country.

The dorm is on Stamford Street, a hundred yards or so
from Waterloo Station. The central location puts you
just a few minutes' walk from Trafalgar Square,
Leicester Square, and the theater district. Most folks
walk when they're headed to central
London, it's so close.

The cost for the program is about $5,000. While the
amount seems quite high, it's low when compared to
other schools' tuition for similar programs. And since
it includes tuition, air travel, and lodging, it's not
as steep as it sounds. Moreover, WE CAN GET FINANCIAL
AID FOR VIRTUALLY ANY STUDENT IN THE PROGRAM. So,
money is not nearly the worry that you think it is.
