The Muslim Student Association, in conjunction with TeamVols, is sponsoring
the Fourth Annual Ramadan Fast-a-Thon. This event is designed to raise
money (we're hoping for over $2000 this year!) for the Love Kitchen, a
local non-profit emergency food pantry.
Here's how it works: For every person who pledges to fast, local businesses
will donate $2 to the Love Kitchen. Those who choose to fast will abstain
from food and drink during the daylight hours on November 4th. At sunset
that evening, all participating students will be invited to break their fasts
in the UC Ballroom at 5:40pm with a home-cooked meal prepared by local
Muslim families. There will also be presentations on the problems of
hunger in Knoxville, as well as a brief explanation of Ramadan and fasting
in other religious paradigms.
During the month of Ramadan (which began Oct. 15), Muslims fast during
daylight hours as an act of submission, solidarity, and remembrance. One of
the main reasons for fasting is to call attention to those who go hungry every
day, not as an exercise of religious expression, but as a fact of life. In
Knoxville alone, as many as 360 calls for emergency food may be placed in a
single day to area food pantries, soup kitchens, and other emergency food
providers. Hunger is not something that only happens "over there" in some
distant metropolis; hunger is happening right here, in our city, right now.
We would like you to help us bring light to the issue of hunger in our area
and raise money for the Love Kitchen by signing up and telling your friends
about this event. Students and Faculty can pledge to fast on Tuesday
October 26th (first 50 fasters get free t-shirts!), October 27th, 28th,
November 2nd and 3rd at one of our pledge tables, located on the UC and
Humanities plazas. You can also pledge online at www.msaknoxville.org.
TeamVols and the Muslim Student Association hopes you and your friends will
partake in this innovative and exciting event. If any of you would like a MSA
representative to come speak to an organization you are in about this event
for a few minutes and bring pledge sign-ups, we would be more than happy to
arrange this.
Please contact us at [log in to unmask] for any further questions.
We thank you in advance for your support of the Love Kitchen and the local
Muslim student community.
At your service,
The Muslim Student Association
