Golden Key Meeting 10/7/04
Thanks to all those who came out, we had a huge turnout. Here’s some of what
we discussed.
Mr. David Twiggs was there to tell everyone how they could earn $142 by being
a poll worker. It’s not to late to get in on this great deal. You will be paid
for two trainings ($20 each) and then if you decide to actually work the polls
you will be paid for that as well. The first training class will probably be
next Saturday around 6. If you are interested and could not make the meeting
please visit www.knoxcounty.org/election.
Adrian Lerner from Just Democracy also came and spoke. If you would like
additional training as a poll worker or would like to learn more about the
rules governing an election Just Democracy will be offering extra training for
those interested. Please e-mail [log in to unmask] for more information.
Now through Monday they still need people to help process the multitude of
voter registration forms that they have. You can choose your hours between
8AM-8PM. Pay is $7/hr. Call Tammy Cole at 215-3376 for more information.
Green School tutoring is still going on this semester Monday through Thursday
from 3-4. If you are interested in doing this e-mail David Deane
[log in to unmask]
Our Golden Key chapter will also be adopting Austin East High school to help
encourage students to go to college. If you would like more information on
this program e-mail Jennifer Gridley [log in to unmask]
POLLWORK INFORMATION
If you are still interested in working the polls, please complete the
application below and fax it in to the number given before Monday:
http://www.knoxcounty.org/election/application.php
The first of two mandatory trainings will be this Tuesday, Oct 12 at 7pm in
room 136 of the law school. Most of the doors lock at 7pm... the main front
entrance (facing Cumberland Ave.) will be open if you arrive a few minutes
late.
The second training will be scheduled for either Monday, Oct 25 or Wed, Oct 27
from 4-6pm at Central High School (will get you directions when the date and
time is finalized).
The election is Tues, Nov 2 and the polls are open from 8am to 8pm. If you
help open, plan on being there at 7;30am. If you close, everyone in line at
8pm gets to vote, so you will probably be there past 9pm. You will also have
an opportunity to participate in counting the votes and will be the first to
know who won the district you are in! How cool is that?!
We will be allowed to split the shift into two half shifts. Please realize
that if you work the first half of the day, you are required to stay until
your replacement shows up. Please realize that if you work the second half of
the day, the person you are replacing has to get to class and be respectful of
that.
Thank you everyone for your interest. If you can't participate in this
election because of classes, please consider working an election in the
future. It's important to help keep democracy alive and the country free!
Again, thanks for your interest and support!
Jennifer
PS - Golden Key will be having information tables on the UC Plaza from 10am -
2pm Tues, Oct 12 and Wed, Oct 13 so you can find out more about us! :)
