These are as many answers as I have to the questions that have come up. And
exact times will be available closer to the date of the elections.
The training session is a 2 hour commitment that is usually held the week
prior to the election. You are paid $20 for this whether you decide to help
with the polls or not. If it's not going to be your thing, this is when you
find out.
The day of the election, I'm not sure of the exact hours. I do know that we
are allowed to split the shift into two half days (for half pay). However, if
you are working a half day, you can't leave until your replacement arrives.
Which means that if you are going to commit to being a pollworker, we need you
to commit to being there a few minutes before your shift is to start. If
you're working half a day, it's probably because you have classes. Respect
that the person you are replacing probably does too.
Anyone over 18 who is registered in this county can work the polls. Which
means, invite your roomie, friends, whomever! I've been told that with 95
polling places in this county and 4-5 workers at each, no one will be turned
away from working. However, it also means that if you aren't registered to
vote in Knox County, you need to change your registration pronto! (Deadline
for receipt is Oct 2.) Go to http://www.state.tn.us/sos/election/index.htm to
print the application, then just fill it out and mail it in. It'll take maybe
5 minutes. More if Adobe Acrobat moves slow for ya. Make sure you fill in
political party, as you will be split into two groups based on that.
The next Golden Key meeting will be Wednesday, October 6. We are changing the
time, so when that is set I will let you know when and where (probably 7pm).
Mr. David Twiggs, Deputy Registrar for the Knox County Elections Commission
will be speaking more about what we all need to know and do. (There is an
employment app to fill out too. I'll let you know more when I do.) If at all
possible, please try to make it to the meeting.
Thank you all for your interest! It makes me very excited to see how much Vol
Spirit we have. And more excited to be able to help put it to much needed use!
