Hey guys,
Meeting Tomorow, TUESDAY, at 6:30 in room 224 of TRECS. Same place as always,
through the turnstyles, upstairs, take a left. We will put up a sign, so no
one will get lost. YES, THERE WILL BE PIZZA AND DRINKS. We are having
officer elections, so this is the perfect time to start getting involved. If
you are getting this email, you have the oppurtunity to
become an officer. Also, we are giving three $500.00 scholarships to members
who have been participating. Yes, these are students just like yourself who
have taken advantage of some of the great things Golden Key has to
offer(money). Speaking of things Golden Key has to offer, please come by and
get your cord(15.00) and/or stole(25.00) at the meeting. We will be selling
them before and after meeting, so make sure to pick them up. In addition, we
will be discussing various projects that are ongoing/coming up such as Relay
for Life, Tutoring, and Habitat for Humanity's
Shantytown, etc. etc. Below, is a message about the Habitat for Humanity
Shantytown event, so check it out too. That's it for today. Hope to see
everyone tomorow night.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The University of Tennessee campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity is in the
process of planning its annual Shantytown event to take place on April 14-15,
2004 at 4:00 p.m. at Presidential Courtyard. Shantytown is a 24 hour peaceful
demonstration in protest of the number of homeless citizens, mothers, fathers,
sisters, and brothers that our country sustains. During Shantytown, students
agree to sleep in boxes on campus in order to increase awareness of
homelessness issues. Also, the event will hold several activities including a
“battle of the bands” competition, guest speakers, a Twister tournament, prize
drawings for participants, and much more.
This year we would like to raise the bar and ask all other campus
organizations to participate in the event. We would like AT LEAST one
representative from each organization to sign up to participate. This is a
great opportunity for you to give back to the university while helping a local
family in the process.
By participating in Shantytown, you, as individuals and as an organization,
have the opportunity to be an advocate for social change. You can take a stand
and show that you are ready and willing to make a postivie change in the lives
of needy individuals within our own community. Through organizations such as
Habitat for Humanity, students are able to take responsibility for the campus
in which they learn and the community in which they live.
In addition to raising awareness of homelessness and poverty issues,
Shantytown is a way for individuals and organizations to directly help a
Knoxville family break the cycle of poverty and substandard housing. All of
the donations made will be used to fund UTK’s eighth student sponsored Habitat
for Humanity home! We still have a lot of money to raise, and we need your
participation to make a family’s dream possible. If you or any of your members
would like to participate, you are required to raise a minimum of $25 (but
this is by no means a limit).
If you would like more information or think you would like to participate,
please contact us at [log in to unmask] You can also call Brittani Kridler
423-237-1831. We will provide further information through information tables,
flyers, and brochures around campus.
Thank you for your time. I hope that you will participate in this great event,
and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
