POSITION: Information Specialist II

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Tennessee Libraries seeks a
creative and self-motivated writer with the ability to work independently
and on deadline. The individual will be responsible for devising an agenda
for promoting the Libraries’ image through publications, publicity, and
public events. Position involves writing features and press releases for
the mass media and writing for the scholarly community, including
newsletters, brochures, presentations, an annual report, as well as
substantive editing of scholarly articles and grant proposals. The writer
will be expected to establish contacts with local media, seek publicity in
national library journals, develop and plan public readings and lectures.
Working closely with the Dean of Libraries, position will supervise one
staff member who does layout of publications and provides administrative
support.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree with a preferred emphasis in
journalism or writing. Several years writing experience as well as
experience in higher education. Excellent organizational skills and
ability to work on numerous projects simultaneously. Knowledge of
Microsoft Office software that includes experience creating Powerpoint
presentations. Familiarity with web page development and desktop
publishing. Excellent communications skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree preferred. Experience working
in an academic or research library. Knowledge of public relations.
Familiarity with the graphic arts.
BENEFITS: Annual leave is accrued at the rate of two days per month and
sick leave at the rate of one day per month. Exempt Staff have their
choice of a state retirement plan or ORP. Non-refundable contributions
to either retirement plan are paid for the employee by the University.
Group health and life insurance plans are available. Tuition remission is
available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition
remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee, a Carnegie Research Level One
institution, enrolls approximately 26,000 students from every state in the

comprehensive campus, UT offers more doctoral programs than any other
institution in the state, and its faculty attract nearly $80 million

The UTK Libraries, with an annual budget of $11 million, holds 2 million
volumes and receives approximately 10,000 current serials. The Libraries
system includes the John C. Hodges Library and four branches on the
Knoxville campus: Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine, Map, Music, and Special
Collections. A fifth branch, the Social Work Library, is located in
Nashville. Over three hundred persons are employed, including 49
librarians, 8 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150 students. UTK Libraries is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries. The UT Libraries offers a Web-based information
system and access to a variety of electronic information sources.
