Need a really great summer student? I interviewed three really bright,
talented, mature, articulate and polished students yesterday through the
INROADS minority student placement program and can only take one of them,
though I would hire all three in a heartbeat. One is a sophomore at TSU, and
the other two are graduating seniors from Gallatin High School (one headed
to TSU and the other to Memphis). They all want to pursue careers in PR, and
from interviewing them, I have no doubt that some of us may be working for
them someday.
Some of you may be familiar with INROADS, which has placed accounting,
engineering and computer science students in businesses for many years. The
program has now branched out into communications with these three students
being the first they will place in our field. They have been through a
two-year coaching period from INROADS on working in the real world, and are
far and above many of our college-age student interns we have hired in their
"business sense." Expected pay rate is $7.35 per hour, and you will have
some mentoring and coaching responsibilities as well, but these young ladies
would be a delight to mentor. For out-of-Nashville placements, you'll also
need to find suitable housing (college campus is usually suggested).
If you're interested in the program, and if you're serious about encouraging
and increasing minority participation in the PR field, contact Yolanda
Darville, INROADS manager of corporate and student services in
Nashville--615-255-7397, ex. 245, or [log in to unmask] I can guarantee
you won't be sorry.
