Is anyone else totally incensed at the Channel 10 promo featuring Ted Hall
self righteously proclaiming that their hallowed station "ignores the spin
doctors"??????
I would like to know what you all think of this. Me?? I think the
local/regional PR community should band together, stand up for ourselves and
send a letter to WBIR's station management denouncing that ad. Aren't we
members/associates of PRSA to raise up our profession and our credibility
and defend it against nonsense like this???
If I were to write them a letter or meet with them, I would tell them that
I'd like to know exactly what group of people they are referring to by "spin
doctors" and also remind them that their derogatory promo does nothing to
further the widely perceived strained relationship between the media and
public relations professionals. I believe a) that they are referring to you
and me, my friends; and b) that they owe us an apology and need to YANK that
promo immediately. But they would only consider doing it if there's an
outcry and/or consequences. Are we going to let them get away with this?
I realize that for any person or persons to sign name(s) to said letter
would be tantamount to media relations suicide, but I would like to see us
as a profession stand up for ourselves and rebuke those who relegate us to
"spin doctors" and then proclaim that they are ignoring us. In my fantasies,
I would like to see PRSA as a whole stage an unannounced week-long media
relations boycott whereby neither the newspapers nor broadcast media would
be pitched by any of us. Then I'd like to see what kind of "news" they run.
As questionable as the news judgment is today, I'd hate to see the news
product during a "pitching boycott."
Rant over. Would love to see others' opinions of this disgusting promo. I am
highly offended and wonder if any of you are, too.
Cheers.
