Evaluation Complexity of Algorithms for Nonconvex Optimization:
Theory, Computation, and Perspectives

From Coralia Cartis, Nicholas I. M. Gould, and Philippe L. Toint, this
is the go-to book for anyone interested in solving nonconvex
optimization problems. It is the first book on evaluation complexity
to cover topics such as composite and constrained optimization,
derivative-free optimization, subproblem solution, and optimal (lower
and sharpness) bounds for nonconvex problems. It is also the first to
address the disadvantages of traditional optimality measures and
propose useful surrogates leading to algorithms that compute
approximate high-order critical points, and to compare traditional and
new methods, highlighting the advantages of the latter from a
complexity point of view.

Subject: New Book, Foundations of Computational Imaging

Collecting a set of classical and emerging methods not available in a
single treatment, Foundations of Computational Imaging: A Model-Based
Approach by Charles A. Bouman is the first book to define a common
foundation for the mathematical and statistical methods used in
computational imaging. The book brings together a blend of research
with applications in a variety of disciplines, including applied math,
physics, chemistry, optics, and signal processing, to address a
collection of problems that can benefit from a common set of methods.

Subject: New Book, Numerical Infinities and Infinitesimals in Optim

The new Springer book "Numerical Infinities and Infinitesimals in
Optimization" https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-93642-6
edited by Yaroslav D. Sergeyev (University of Calabria, Italy) and
Renato De Leone (University of Camerino, Italy) contains contributions
of 22 authors using in optimization a new powerful supercomputing
paradigm http://www.theinfinitycomputer.com/ allowing to numerically
work with different infinities and infinitesimals on the Infinity
Computer patented in several countries. This is the first book
presenting to the readers interested in optimization the advantages of
the paradigm. The volume provides a friendly introduction to the
paradigm and a broad panorama of killing applications of the Infinity
Computer in optimization: radically new numerical algorithms, great
theoretical insights, efficient software implementations, and
interesting practical case studies. One of the editors of the book is
the creator of the Infinity Computer, and another editor was the first
who has started to use it in optimization. Their results were awarded
by numerous scientific prizes. This engaging book opens new horizons
for researchers, engineers, professors, and students with interests in
supercomputing paradigms, optimization, decision making, game theory,
and foundations of mathematics and computer science. This volume is a
part of the Springer book series Emergence, Complexity and
Computation.

Subject: Postdoc Position, Grammar-guided Multigrid, Cerfacs, France

A two-year Postdoc position is available at Cerfacs, Toulouse. The
project aims to develop concepts and a toolchain based on artificial
intelligence to automatically generate a performant preconditioner for
a Krylov subspace iterative solver for the solution of linear systems
arising from a discretized Stokes problem. We will focus in particular
on a geometric multigrid preconditioner for the (1,1)-block, here, the
Laplace operator, to ensure the scalability of the solver when passing
to large-scale problems. The solver will be broken down into
components, which are then recombined in an optimal manner for
predefined criteria, using evolutionary algorithm design
techniques. The particular difficulty to develop such a toolchain for
saddle point systems is the large number of possible combinations of
solution techniques, e.g., preconditioned Krylov subspace solvers,
Schur complement approaches, deflation and augmentation techniques, or
also monolithic multigrid solvers on the whole block system. As final
step, we envisage to obtain executable code applying the best guess
solver through automatic code generation.

Required profile: PhD with experience in one or several of the
following domains: applied mathematics, computer science, iterative
solvers, numerical linear algebra, artificial intelligence, high
performance computing.
