This is the second announcement of a workshop on "Representations and
Asymptotic Group Theory", to be held on 6-7 April 2009 at the
University of Southampton. Please see
https://www.ma.rhul.ac.uk/representations/
for further details, including a provisional schedule of talks and a
list of confirmed participants. The list of speakers is also given
below.
The workshop is supported by the Research Council EPSRC and is part of
the South England Profinite Groups Meetings, see
http://www.ma.rhul.ac.uk/profinite_groups/meetings.html.
Brief Description: The workshop will bring together people with
interests in asymptotic and arithmetic aspects of the representation
theory of infinite groups or families of finite groups. A guiding
theme will be representation growth, e.g. in arithmetic and p-adic Lie
groups. Related topics include: representations of finite reductive
groups, smooth representations of locally-compact p-adic Lie groups in
the context of the Langlands conjectures and conjugacy classes in
finite p-groups.
The speakers are:
N. Avni (Harvard University),
L. Bartholdi (Universität Göttingen),
S. Goodwin (University of Birmingham),
M. Liebeck (Imperial College London),
A. Shalev - tbc - (Hebrew University of Jerusalem),
U. Onn (Ben Gurion University),
A. Stasinski (University of Southampton),
S. Stevens (University of East Anglia).
The speakers are encouraged to present key methods and open problems
in order to initiate discussions amongst the participants. There will
be ample opportunities for informal interactions.
Registration: Please notice that the deadline for registration is 6
March 2009. We will appreciate early registration. Please register
using the web form, following the corresponding link from the workshop
web page.
Financial Support: We have limited funding to cover local and travel
expenses. Application for support can be made at the time of
registration.
Please help us to advertise the event. A printable poster can be
downloaded from the workshop web page.
We are looking forward to seeing you in April,
Benjamin Klopsch and Christopher Voll

This message was sent to you via the Geometry List, which announces conferences in geometry and closely related areas to over 1100 mathematicians worldwide.
Before sending an announcement, please carefully read the following. To announce a geometry or closely related conference, send the announcement (including a conference web site if possible) to [log in to unmask] The moderator cannot edit your message; list members will receive the announcement as an e-mail from you EXACTLY as you submitted it. For example, if your submission starts with "Please post this on the geometry list" then your conference anouncement will also begin with that statement. In order to keep down the volume of e-mail, only TWO announcements per conference will be approved by the moderator. The "subject" of your message should include the name of the conference and the number (first or second) of the announcement, e.g. Gauss Memorial Lectures in Geometry: Second Announcement. Please check that your announcement (especially the website) is correct! Corrections will be approved only in the most critical situations, e.g. if corrected information is not available on the website. If you send a submission from an e-mail address that is not subscribed to the geometry list then you will be sent an e-mail asking for confirmation. This feature is designed to thwart the hundreds of machine-generated spam that are sent to the list and would otherwise have to be manually blocked by the moderator.
At http://listserv.utk.edu/archives/geometry.html there are many functions available, including checking the archives since November 2005, changing your e-mail address or preferences, and joining/leaving the list. If you have problems that cannot be resolved at this website, send a message to [log in to unmask]
The Geometry List is sponsored and maintained by the Mathematics Department, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
